When you think of holiday classics, one of the most timeless stories is A Christmas Carol. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future have been in the public consciousness since 1848.

Over the years, there have been plenty of iterations of the classic tale. One such version premiered in 1938. It’s been nearly 85 years since the film’s release, who was part of the cast?

The title character Ebenezer Scrooge was played by British actor Reginald Owen. The actor is best known for roles including films such as Sherlock Holmes, Mary Poppins, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Bob Crachit, who is the clerk that is woefully underpaid by his boss Mr. Scrooge, was played by actor Gene Lockhart.

His wife, Kathleen Lockhart, and his daughter, June Lockhart, played Crachit’s wife and daughter, respectively as well. June is one of the few actors from the movie who is still alive and acting.

Who was part of the A Christmas Carol 1938 cast?

Actor Terry Kilburn played Tiny Tim. He didn’t have a long film career, with his last film role being in 1962. Fred, who is Scrooge’s nephew, was played by Barry MacKay. These are just some of the actors who appeared in the film. Here are some of the other cast members, including the three Ghosts:

  • Leo G. Carroll as Marley’s Ghost (Scrooge’s business partner)
  • Ann Rutherford as Ghost of Christmas Past
  • Lionel Braham as Ghost of Christmas Present
  • D’Arcy Corrigan as Ghost of Christmas Future

Netflix recently released a new version of the classic film. Scrooge: A Christmas Carol was released in theaters before appearing on the streaming service on Dec. 2. This version is different from previous iterations as it involves computer animation and plenty of music.
