Superman and Lois is set to fly back onto screens during the midseason in 2023. The show is going to look noticeably different, at least in terms of the Kent family. Prior to filming, it was announced that Jordan Elsass had stepped down from the role of Jonathan Kent. While Jon’s twin, Jordan, won’t be without his brother in season 3, fans will have to adjust to a new actor.

Expectations are high for season 3 of this hit show. The series is one of the top rated programs on The CW and is considered one of the best adaptations of Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s story. Some (like myself) would even go as far as to call Tyler Hoechlin the definitive Superman.

So, where does the show go next? Here’s everything we know about Superman and Lois‘ third season including casting news, when the season could arrive on HBO Max, and more!

Is Superman and Lois season 3 filming?

Yes, filming started in September 2022.

Superman and Lois season 3 premiere date

The third season opener, “Closer,” premieres Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

When is Superman and Lois season 3 coming to HBO Max?

With a March premiere date, HBO Max subscribers shouldn’t expect season 3 to hit the streamer until summer 2023. Even if the third season runs uninterrupted, which is unlikely, it won’t finish its run until June. The second season landed on the platform a month after its finale aired, if season 3 follows the same pattern, fans could see the third season make its streaming debut in July or August, depending on when the finale airs.

How many episodes does Superman and Lois season 3 have?

An official count hasn’t been released, however, we can likely expect 15 episodes like the previous two seasons.

Why did Jordan Elsass leave Superman and Lois?

TVLine reports Jordan Elsass exited the series due to personal reasons that were later revealed to be concerning his mental health. The actor cited a desire to step back and take time for himself.

Has the role of Jonathan Kent been recast on Superman and Lois?

Yes, Michael Bishop (Spin) has stepped into the role of Jonathan Kent for the series. The casting was announced in the first week of Sept. 2022, which is when production was set to start, so viewers won’t have to anticipate missing Jonathan for the first few episodes of the season.

Superman and Lois season 3 synopsis

Per the official description via The CW:

"Season three of SUPERMAN & LOIS opens weeks after Superman’s blowout defeat of Ally Allston. Clark and Lois are now working at the Smallville Gazette together and enjoying small town life. But the Kents’ romantic bliss only shines a light on how isolating “the secret” can be, as Chrissy struggles to balance a new love interest and her friendship with Lois. However, Lois’ own work-life balance is put to the test when an undercover assignment reveals a deadly foe that promises to change the Kent family forever. Superman would move heaven and earth for his family, but with a villain this merciless, even that might not be enough.Meanwhile, the Kent boys find themselves being pulled in opposite directions as Jordan (Alex Garfin) discovers what a superhero-identity really means and Jonathan searches for purpose beyond the football field. Amid all this upheaval, John Henry is haunted by his doppelgänger’s past, leading to dangerous consequences for him and Natalie. Lana Lang and Kyle redefine their family post-separation, while Sarah explores what the future holds for her and Jordan now that she knows the truth about his powers. Having learned the hard way that no one else can be trusted to work with Superman, General Samuel Lane reclaims his post at the Department of Defense, only to face his own conflict in working with his grandson, Jordan."

The deadly foe described in the synopsis for the season is likely Bruno Mannheim. This iteration of the character is known as a philanthropist and local hero in Metropolis. However, that’s only his public face. Bruno is the head of Intergang, a notorious criminal organization. Lois has been working to prove this for years and, in season 3, she follows new leads that could get her closer to uncover all the evidence she needs.

Bruno Mannheim is played by Chad L. Coleman. Longtime viewers of The CW may recognize the actor from All American as Spencer’s father, Corey James, and Arrow where he played Tobias Church. Coleman has also starred in The Orville, The Expanse, and The Walking Dead.
