How to Murder Your Husband is sure to grab viewers by the throat and not let go. The film, which stars Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Cybill Shepherd, follows Nancy Crampton-Brophy, a romance-thriller novelist whose murderous creativity jumps off the page…literally.
See Nancy writes about tumultuous relationships and women who fantasize about killing their husbands. She has a knack for it. Whether she has her strong protagonists give into their desire or flee, faking their own death, her skill (and book covers with seductive men) have enraptured her audience.
No one, however, could have guessed she’d spin a tale of her own in real life but that’s exactly what happens when she plots and then executes the murder of her husband, David. Here’s more on the film.

The TV-14 movie premieres Saturday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime. How to Murder Your Husband will re-air Sunday, Jan. 15 at 12:01 a.m. and 10:03 p.m. It’ll also be available to stream on mylifetime.com on Sunday as well.
Is How to Murder Your Husband based on a true story?
Yes, the film is a part of Lifetime’s 2023 Ripped from the Headlines slate. AETV reports that the real life Nancy Crampton-Brophy killed her husband in 2018. She’d committed the crime at the Oregon Culinary Institute, where he was a well-respected instructor.
Crampton-Brophy was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, however, it wasn’t until May 2022 that she was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. She’s serving out her sentence at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, Oregon.
Seven years prior to the murder, Crampton-Brophy wrote “How to Murder Your Husband” for the website See Jane Publish. In the post, she listed five reasons for murder: “financial; lying and cheating; falling in love with someone else; being abused; and being a professional (ie. a hired killer).” The prosecution argued her motive was financial. She and her husband were struggling financially and if he died she’d be able to cash in on his 1.4 million dollar life insurance policy and own their home.
Crampton-Brophy was a romance suspence novelist and she did write about murder, so her real life story is actually stranger than fiction.
