One of the most highly anticipated new shows of 2023 comes to us early in the year, with The Last of Us premiering tonight on HBO and HBO Max. The post-apocalyptic drama series is based on the best-selling video game of the same name, and stars Game of Thrones vets Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. The series is going to be a major hit for the network, I already know it. Based on the first episode alone, it’s clear viewers are going to be hooked. And we only have a few short hours to start watching!
The Last of Us follows protagonist Joel, a man who lost his family during the zombie outbreak 20 years ago. While living at a quarantine base, he’s then tasked with protecting a teenager named Ellie who’s somehow immune to the virus and can potentially help create the cure. Pascal is playing a father figure again, and we love to see it.
If you start watching The Last of Us tonight and wonder where HBO shot the new show, we have all the details you need!
Where does The Last of Us take place? Where was it filmed?
Without getting into major spoilers, the premiere of The Last of Us takes place in Austin, Texas, as well as Boston, Massachusetts. We can expect other locations to be featured after the first episode. As for real life, according to CTV News, the series was mostly filmed in Alberta, Canada. The site reports that The Last of Us marked the biggest production the province has ever seen and one of the biggest in the country. Filming took place between July 2021 and June 2022.
Alberta Film Commissioner Mark Ham told CTV News of the production: “We are really proud of the fact that Alberta, in its entirety, is going to be showcased. It wasn’t just the traditional locations being featured.”
The Last of Us season 1 will run for nine episodes, with new ones released every Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
