The Last of Us release updates, synopsis, cast, and first look

There’s been many successful shows created that have been based on video games. Some of those are Netflix’s The Witcher, Resident Evil, and Paramount+’s Halo. Now, HBO is bringing another game to life – The Last of Us.

The new series is based on the 2013 action-adventure game of the same name. It was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The show was co-produced with PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures Television.

Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin are co-creators, writers, directors, and executive producers. Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam also take on EP duties. Behind the cameras, Kantemir Balagov, Jasmila Žbanić, Ali Abbasi, Peter Hoar, Jeremy Webb, and Liza Johnson serve as directors.

The Last of Us release updates

HBO shared the series is set to premiere Sunday, Jan. 15. There will be a total of nine episodes.

The Last of Us synopsis

The Last of Us centers around Joel and Ellie. The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel is a hardened survivor who has the task of smuggling 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey. The duo traverse the U.S. and have to depend on each other to survive.

In a fun easter egg, Baker and Johnson were the voice actors who played Joel and Ellie in the video game. They’ve joined the cast in the HBO series, but it’s not known how big their roles will be. They will be playing different characters from their video game counterparts.
