New Amsterdam aired its Season 5 finale on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Was that the series finale, or will Season 6 happen? Here’s what we know about the series.
If you were disappointed that New Amsterdam Season 5 was only 13 episodes long, you’re not alone. Also, if you’re disappointed in the storyline for the fifth season, you’re definitely not alone.
The Season 5 finale brought us a storyline that would see Max leave the hospital. We met a new Medical Director, although there was a twist to who this young woman was. She wasn’t the one taking over for Max, who had decided to head to Switzerland to put more focus on raising his daughter, Luna.
It did feel a little odd and rushed, to be honest. One minute Max was happy at the hospital and then suddenly he decided to leave. There was no buildup to Luna struggling with Max being at the hospital so much. It made it look like this Season 5 finale was a rushed series finale.
Is New Amsterdam Season 6 happening?
Was that the case? Well, sort of. New Amsterdam Season 5 is the last. It wasn’t a rushed ending, though.
NBC announced that the medical drama would come to an end with Season 5 back in March 2022. We also learned that the show would have 13 episodes. A lot of shows don’t get renewed until May and then need to start writing so production can start in July. This medical drama had plenty of time to start the writing and plan a few things out to prevent the finale from feeling rushed and strange.
There isn’t going to be a sixth season. It’s not clear why NBC canceled the show, though. The only reason could be the cost. It is possible that the show was too expensive and wasn’t pulling in strong enough live ratings. Season 5 sat in 10th out of 12 scripted shows in the demo, and it was ninth in the audience. NBC may want to open the Tuesday night slot to another show to see if it can perform better. All good shows need to come to an end eventually.
New Amsterdam is available to stream on Peacock.
