The Great season 3 on Hulu release date, cast, and more

The Great -- Episode 301 -- Season 3 of “The Great” sees Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) attempt to make their marriage work after some seemingly insurmountable problems. Peter witnessed his own attempted murder at Catherine’s hands and she also imprisoned all of his friends. On top of this, Peter is at a loose end playing First Husband to Catherine’s reign, so he busies himself with fathering, hunting and salty culinary ventures. But they’re not enough to keep him contented as visions of his late father (played by Jason Isaacs), get in his head about his failures as Peter the Great’s son. Catherine the Great starts making a name for herself beyond her borders and inspired by a visit from the US ambassador, sets up a conference where peasants, nobles and merchants can all give their input on developing a new Russia. Fans of The Great on Hulu, we have been waiting a very long time for the third season of the series to arrive. Season 2 dropped in November 2021, so it’s been over a year now! Well, the good news is that we know when the season 3 release date is, and some more.

The satirical black comedy-drama is loosely based on the story of the real-life Catherine the Great, who was the Empress of Russia, and her husband Peter III. Though the show has taken many deviations from reality, and we’re all here for it.

Here’s what we know about The Great season 3 ahead of its release!

The Great season 3 release date

The show officially makes its return to our small screens Friday, May 12, 2023 on Hulu. Just like its predecessors, there will be a total of 10 episodes. All of them will be available to stream on premiere day, so get ready for a binge-watch!

The Great season 3 synopsis

If you remember, the finale of the drama’s sophomore season left us with a big cliffhanger! Catherine stabbed who she thought was Peter, basically going through the act of killing him. But surprise, it wasn’t her husband. It was his double, Pugachev. Though she was crying and relieved, where in the world do the two go from there?

Well, season 3 will pick up after the event with Catherine and Peter trying to make their marriage work, per the synopsis. But still, that doesn’t mean everything will be smooth sailing for the ruler and the former Russian emperor. Peter tries to stay busy with being a father, cooking, and hunting. But visions of his father taunting him about his failures  will haunt him.

Elsewhere, Catherine is staring to make “a name for herself” outside of Russia and may learn the lesson that sometimes compromise is in order. When a U.S. ambassador visits, she’s inspired to bring together peasants, merchants, and nobles so they can give their opinions on how to make Russia better as it continues to develop, per the synopsis.

Of course we know that Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great and  Nicholas Hoult as Peter III of Russia will be reprising their roles. As for everyone else, we’re not sure at this time. But here’s who is also expected to return in season 3:
