A potential spinoff series to medical drama The Good Doctor could be coming to ABC. The network is airing a backdoor pilot for The Good Lawyer on the original show’s next episode on Monday, March 13, 2023.
A backdoor pilot is when an episode of an existing show (in this case The Good Doctor) is used to introduce a spin-off (The Good Lawyer). Though the spinoff hasn’t been picked up yet according to TVLine, this will allow the network to test the waters. Depending on audience reaction, that will probably be big factor as to whether ABC decides to give The Good Lawyer a shot.
So what can we expect to see in the sequel? Who are the characters? We’ve got the answer for you below!
What is The Good Doctor spinoff The Good Lawyer about?
The March 13 episode of The Good Doctor is going to introduce us to the potential new story and characters it would center around. And that’s going to happen following the events of the March 6 episode. Dr. Shaun Murphy is forced to find a lawyer after he’s been accused of malpractice.
Episode 16 will see our favorite medical professional choose a young lawyer who has obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and forms a connection with her as the promo shows. That young legal rep is Joni DeGroot, played by Nancy Drew actress Kennedy McMann, per ABC. She’s described as a “brilliant, funny and self-aware lawyer” whose OCD can be a challenge on her personal and professional life. But her attention to detail more than helps her with cases.
Felicity Huffman will also guest star as Janet Stewart, a seasoned attorney and partner at the law firm who has represented Dr. Aaron Glassman many times over the years. She is the one who was supposed to be Shaun’s lawyer, but the doctor decides to go with Joni.
