Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to the 2018 superhero film, premiered this past weekend!

Now that you’ve either seen the movie or are about to see it, you may be wondering how well the sequel fared with movie goers who ran to the theaters on opening night.

To be more specific, how big or how little of an opening did Shazam! Fury of the Gods bring in for theaters nationwide and internationally?

How much money did Shazam! Fury of the Gods make on opening weekend?

Well, hold on to your lightning bolts because we have the results right here. The film had a domestic opening of $30.5 million and a global start of $66 million. To most, that’s significantly lower than what fans were hoping for.

There are many factors as to why this film did not have such a large turn out to the theaters. Some may suggest that theaters are still in the midst of a post-pandemic restructuring and with the continued rise of streaming services, regular theater-goers may have opted to stay home and wait for the SVOD release which, unfortunately doesn’t affect box office numbers.

In order to recover from the pandemic theaters and movies alike have to rethink out-of-home and in-theater marketing strategies. Even though Shazam! Fury of the Gods is apart of a large franchise, it seems that even solid reviews of the movie didn’t make a dent in helping the movie’s in-theater release.

If we’re comparing it to other DC openings such as its predecessor, Shazam, which had a $53.5 million opening in April 2019, the second film will join the ranks of the modern DC Comics’ low end movie launches including Birds of Prey which brought in $33 million in February 2020 and The Suicide Squad which brought in $26.2 million in August 2021. Though it’s important to know that both of those films were R-rated and Shazam! Fury of the Gods is rated PG-13.

Here are the top ten movies of the weekend domestic theatrical earnings from Friday, March 16, to Sunday, March 18:

  • Shazam! Fury of the Gods: $30,500,000
  • Scream VI: $17,500,000
  • Creed III: $15,372,838
