The Super Mario Bros. Movie has arrived and…it does not live up to the hype, unfortunately. Hidden Remote’s Ricky Valero tried to warn us all, the movie plays it way too safe, which robs adult fans from a fun experience. But the misses go beyond the script. In fact, it all starts with the lead voice role for Mario. Let’s just say, Chris Pratt is not it.

Listen, I’m not hating on Chris Pratt, he’s a great actor and the perfect Star-Lord, but as Mario? Not so much. Fans were against this idea since Pratt was announced to be voicing the beloved character. Still, we sat tight and waited for a trailer to get an idea of what we were in for.

Sadly, the trailer and teasers all failed to impress or change our minds on the matter. And after watching the movie, audiences are sharing how Pratt as the voice as Mario is even worse than they imagined it would be. Even from just watching the trailer, you do hear Mario’s popular accent, but only in snippets, the voice doesn’t stay in character. The rest of the time, it just sounds like Pratt. This wouldn’t be an issue if Mario wasn’t known for his one-liners and fun accents.

All that said, we’re listing five actors we believe would’ve been perfect for voicing Mario. No spoilers ahead, promise! If you haven’t seen the movie in theaters just yet, this is a safe place!

5 actors who would make a better Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Jack Black

Now, Jack Black is part of the movie, and you bet he is a standout and one of the few things we did enjoy. He is the perfect Bowser, but I have no doubt in my mind that Black could’ve pulled off a great Mario. Black has such a fun and animated voice. What a miss.

Adam Sandler

Besides Jack Black, who comes to mind when you try to think of the perfect actor to voice a colorful and energetic animated character? It’s probably Adam Sandler. Just listen to him as Dracula in the Hotel Transylvania movies.

Pedro Pascal

Hello! The man of the hour, the moment, Pedro Pascal! Was he not available? Well, probably not since he has been so busy these days starring in The Mandalorian and The Last of UsOkay, to be fair, I did some research and I don’t think Pascal has any history voicing animated characters. So maybe it’s just the fan in me, but I believe Pedro Pascal would’ve been able to rock this role.

Danny DeVito

We all know him, we all love him, Danny DeVito is one incredible voice actor! He’s done it all, from the cruel Swackhammer in Space Jam (1996) to Phil in Hercules, DeVito does not miss.

Charles Martinet

Charles Martinet is the real, true original voice of Mario. He has been voicing the character for decades — and still sounds the same, too! I do see that Martinet is credited in the movie, so he did some voice work (perhaps the iconic Mario lines that we hear), but it should’ve fully been Martinet. What a treat this would’ve been for fans, and no better way to thank Martinet for bringing the character to life than giving him a movie.

Who do you think should have voiced Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
