Let’s-a-go to the movies this week! The computer animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie starts its nationwide theatrical run on Wednesday, April 5!

The long-awaited film has been in development for years and was once in “development hell,” but through the joint collaboration between Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts to create Super Nintendo World, as well as Nintendo bringing back older console games, it sparked the idea to produce a movie. The film is produced by Universal Pictures, Nintendo, and animation studio Illumination.

The film joins the slate of April releases that is projected to do incredibly well at the box office.  After having its Los Angeles premiere on April 1, and running in-theaters across the country, it will premiere internationally in Japan on April 28. The Super Mario Bros. Movie features a voice cast made up of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a script written by Matthew Fogel.  After gaining some more knowledge of the film, you might want to know if this movie is appropriate for kid movie goers to see. If that sounds like you, read on to find out!

The Super Mario Bros. Movie age rating: Is the Mario movie appropriate for kids?

The film was given a ‘PG’ rating by the MPAA. A ‘PG’ rating means that a parent or guardian should accompany children to watch the movie. This movie contains elements of mild slapstick violence, mention of death and destruction. The plot of the film has been under wraps since its first reveal last year so we can only provide so much information but know this:

The film is based on the Super Mario Bros. franchise which has produced a large and loyal fanbase that has transcended generations. Children of all ages have enjoyed gameplay whether through their own experience or watching their older siblings. This is a film that kids will definitely enjoy, even if they aren’t familiar with the franchise. That being said, this film is being marketed as a family and kids film which means that you won’t have to worry about anything too graphic or intense on screen when you bring young ones to watch. If you’re still unsure, watch the trailer below and judge for yourself!
