The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out, and it’s everything fans of the original game need. Here’s a breakdown of the ending, including the end credit scene.

Caution: This post contains spoilers for the ending of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the two end credit scenes.

The time has come to see the animated Mario movie. It’s everything young and old need, with some great moments of nostalgia and a fun ride to help Princess Peach save The Mushroom Kingdom.

The storyline isn’t anything out of this world unusual. That doesn’t stop it from being entertaining. I know the movie doesn’t have the best Rotten Tomatoes score, but sometimes, I think critics forget who the movie is made for.

There are two end credit scenes. One places just after the main credits and is a humorous reminder of a scene from inside the movie. The second is after all the credits and certainly sets up a sequel.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie ending explained

The ending of the movie is pretty much what you would expect. Bowser turns up at The Mushroom Kingdom. Peach agreed to marry him, but it’s all a ploy to take him down. They all believe Mario and Donkey Kong to be dead after they were blasted off Rainbow Road, but the two show up to save the day.

Bowser sets off a rocket, but Mario prevents it from blowing up the castle. The rocket then chases Mario, and he leads it to the tunnel that he came from from Brooklyn at the start of the movie. Of course, this pulls everything from Mushroom Kingdom into the real world, so the fight happens there.

After Mario and Luigi both absorb the Invisibility Star, they take down Bowser. Peach forces him to eat a Blue Mushroom, causing him to shrink. Everyone, including Mario and Luigi, return to Mushroom Kingdom.

What do the end credit scenes mean?

The first end credit scene is of Bowser singing about Mario, Luigi, and Peach. It’s a repeat of the song he sang earlier in the movie, but this time he’s a prisoner in Mushroom Kingdom. Toad tells him it’s time for lights out and walks away.

The second end credit scene sets up a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Back in Brooklyn, just at the entrance to the tunnel, is a Yoshi egg. That Yoshi egg cracks open and we hear his voice.

Seeing a Yoshi egg isn’t all that surprising. Mario and Toad go past a herd of Yoshis on the way to Mushroom Kingdom. It looks like this egg was left behind after Mushroom Kingdom was pulled into the real world. Does this mean a Yoshi is going to need saving from the real world in the (almost guaranteed at this point) sequel?
