Barry Berkman is back and boy has he seen better days! The fourth and final season premiered on Sunday, April 16, picking up just moments after the intense moments season 3 left us with. Buckle up! Barry season 4 is going to be a wild ride, but we’re here to make things a little easier. Here at Hidden Remote, we’ll be answering the biggest questions from each episode. So check back weekly for updates!

Spoiler alert! Before you read on, please note there are significant spoilers below. Though we are not reviewing or recapping the episodes, we’ll be diving in straight to the questions from each episode this season. That said, only read after you’ve watched and are all caught up.

Barry follows Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), a hit-man for hire who suddenly decides to put his dark and criminal past behind. Instead of continuing down a violent path, Barry pursues acting. Unfortunately, for Barry, escaping his past is easier said than done! Trouble follows Barry and it’s only getting worse for him.

Final spoiler warning! Let’s begin with the two episode season 4 premiere.

Barry season 4 episode 1 explained: “yikes”

Welp! They got him. The fourth and final season of Barry kicks off with Barry being walked to his cell. His first phone call? Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). I’ll admit, it’s kind of heartbreaking seeing Barry so distressed and confused. He’s not sure if Cousineau betrayed him or not. So, let’s dive in.

Why did Gene Cousineau betray Barry?

Cousineau was fond of Barry until he learned that Barry killed his beloved girlfriend, Janice Moss. Initially, Cousineau wanted nothing more than for Barry to pay for what he did, but Barry threatened him to keep Cousineau quiet. Jim Moss, Janice’s father, enters the picture and goes straight for Cousineau. Moss suspects that Cousineau knows more than he says about Janice’s death and eventually works together with Cousineau to trap and arrest Barry.

Where are NoHo Hank and Cristobal Sifuentes living?

Our favorite couple find themselves in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hank and Cristobal are renting a home out in the dessert. They are living a quiet, non-violent life, but Cristobal is a business man at heart, so he quickly sets his mind in starting a sand business. Hank is not so sure about this venture, but his mind is busy trying to think of ways to break Barry out of prison.

Why is Barry hallucinating?

Barry has always been…special and not very good at processing his emotions. That said, Barry is losing it. Not only is he confused and hurt by Cousineau’s betrayal, but he also feels regret for going after Fuches. Not to mention, Barry is having a rough time understanding why Sally wants nothing to do with him. Put all of that together you get one crazy Barry Berkman, hallucinations and all.

Why did Barry tell officer Birdwell that he is a cop killer?

See the answer above. Barry is not all there upstairs anymore (was he ever?). When Birdwell stops Barry from hurting himself, he knows that Birdwell will beat him if Barry tells him that he is a cop killer. This is what Barry wants, pain and suffering.

Barry season 4 episode 1 explained: “yikes”

I’m glad we got a two episode premiere because it has been way too long without Barry, so a 30-minute episode would have felt short. Now, let’s get right into it!

What happened to Barry’s dad?

This is still a mystery, but I’m not getting good vibes from what we’ve seen so far at all. Fuches met Barry as a kid, he was a friend of Barry’s dad. We see him in flashbacks Barry is experiencing in prison. We know Fuches is like an uncle or second father to Barry, but we’re curious to learn more about how that relationship developed.

Barry season 4 episode 3, titled “you’re charming,” premieres on HBO and HBO Max next Sunday, April 23. Come back to this post after the episodes for a breakdown!
