HBO’s The Sympathizer starring Robert Downey Jr.: Everything we know so far

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most well known names in the industry, though the talented actor hasn’t taken on many television roles throughout the years. Well, now we can see him in HBO‘s new series, The Sympathizer!

The star also executive produces the historical political drama alongside his wife Susan Downey, co-showrnners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, Amanda Burrell, Kim Ly, Niv Fichman, Ron Schmidt, and Jisun Back. The showrunners also serve as writers and directors on the project.

The Sympathizer starring Robert Downey Jr. release updates

The limited series is set to debut on HBO sometime in 2024. The network didn’t reveal how many episodes to expect yet. Though it hasn’t been confirmed by the company yet, episodes are likely to also stream on HBO Max (soon to become Max as of May 23, 2023) as well.

The Sympathizer synopsis

The story is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by author Viet Thanh Nguyen, who also serves as an executive producer on the show. The “espionage thriller and cross-culture satire” is centered around a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the final days of the Vietnam War, per the synopsis. His line of work gets him exiled to the U.S.

The Sympathizer cast

Actor Xoa Xuande will be taking on the lead role as the communist spy in the upcoming series. He’s a newer actor, having roles in the live action remake of Cowboy Bebop and comedy show Ronny Chieng: International Student on ABC. We shared the full cast list below:
