Is The Conners ending? (Will there be a season 6?)
The Conners just wrapped up its fifth season this week, but is it possible this was a series finale? Find out if the Roseanne spinoff can survive for one more year!
In 2018, ABC latched onto the revival train by bringing back Roseanne. The 1988-1997 ABC hit starred Roseanne Barr and John Goodman to look at the blue-collar Conner family surviving in Chicago. The revival retconned the controversial series ending to show the family handling modern life.
The revival was a success, leading to a renewal. However, Barr was fired after making some controversial social media postings. ABC initially canceled the reboot only to retool it by having the Roseanne character die and the series renamed The Conners.
Since then, the show has been a good ratings success as the Conners handled everything from family problems to the pandemic. The season 5 finale marked the high school graduation of Darlene’s son, Mark.
Yet fans are concerned this might have ended up being the series finale. So is this the case, or can The Conners survive another year?
Is The Conners canceled?
Speaking to TV Line, executive producer Bruce Helford stated that he and the entire cast are hoping to get one more season, which would likely be the last for the series.
"“Sara Gilbert expressed to the network that we don’t want to go out without knowing that we are going out with a series finale so we can build to the right ending — and at this point in time, we feel that [next season] is possibly going to be the last season of The Conners. I would not [say that] definitively because the numbers were so good this season, and we’ve all had a really great time… but it’s definitely a possibility.”"
A complication is the current Writers Guild of America strike, which has curtailed production of numerous series. Helford said if The Conners gets a season 6, it’s possible it could be only 13 episodes. However, he’s eager to see it conclude on its own terms.
“Obviously, we always want to do 20 or 22 [episodes], but at this point in time, we’re talking about if we can do 13 — God willing — and if we can do more, we’ll do more.”
As of now, ABC has yet to make any decisions on the show’s fate. It’s possible with the ending of the long-running The Goldbergs, ABC will want to keep another successful comedy, at least to finish it up properly. Thus, fans are hopeful The Conners can make it to at least one more season.
