When news broke that Denis Villeneuve would adapt Dune, cinema nerds, geeks, and freaks rejoiced that the man behind the acclaimed Blade Runner sequel would treat Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic with the respect and care the epic deserved. Suffice to say, fans were not disappointed. Villeneuve delivered what the entertainment website Ready Steady Cut called Dune, “A sophisticated sci-fi blockbuster, with an epic scope, jaw-dropping action sequences, and stunning visuals.”

Dune is such a rousing success and amassed critical and box office success. The 2021 film amassed over four hundred million dollars worldwide, all during a pandemic-stricken economy and well before Top Gun: Maverick would arrive in theaters the following May. Dune was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won six Oscars. The film currently holds an 83% (498 reviews) approval rate from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive “A-” CinemaScore from audiences.

So, that begs the question, how many sequels of Dune will there be?
