The Little Mermaid’s Kiss The Girl lyrics: What are the new lyrics to Kiss The Girl?

The live-action The Little Mermaid swims into theaters on Friday, May 26. This updated version of the tale with a brand new cast and original songs tells the classic story that Disney fans fell in love with in 1989. We’ll be introduced once again to Ariel, a young mermaid who dreams of life on land. Though her father King Triton would prefer she keep her head underwater, Ariel is inquisitive by nature, headstrong, and unwilling to live her life by rules that constrain her ability to acquire knowledge.

If you’ve seen the movie then you know she makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula. In exchange for her beautiful voice, Ariel gains legs which allow her to explore the world above and, as she does so, she becomes attached to Prince Eric, the young man she saved from a ship wreck. He also happens to be the catalyst for her decision to make such a risky move with Ursula in the original film.

As is common with Disney’s live-action remakes, viewers can expect changes and expansions to the story they’ve known and grown up with in the animated version. Sometimes, these diversions of the original even include song lyrics. In The Little Mermaid‘s case, Deadline reports, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Alan Menken spoke to lyric changes for “Kiss the Girl:

"There are some lyric changes in ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel]."

Below you’ll find the lyrics to the new version of the song. The change Menken is referring to has to do with the original lyric of “Possible she want you too, there is one way to ask her/It don’t take a word, not a single word/Go on and kiss the girl.”

The lyric in the live-action version of the song is as follows “Possible she want you too/Use your words, boy, and ask her/If the time is right and the time is tonight/Go on and kiss the girl.”
