Citadel episode 2 ending explained: “Spies Appear in Night Time”

Episode 2 opens with Nadia saving herself and trying to check in with Bernard who warns her that he has no choice but to “backstop” her and Mason. Keyed up but having little choice but to soldier on, Nadia creates a makeshift tourniquet for her injured leg and hobbles toward the road in search of help. She receives it in the form of a man who was passing by but instead of taking her to a hospital, he brought her to his cabin where he proceeded to hold her against her will.

Savvy and unwilling to go down without a fight, Nadia threw herself into an escape attempt. She managed to kill her captive but the protocol Bernard initiated triggered which provides us with an answer to how she and Mason lost their memories. From there, “Spies Appear in Night Time,” takes the audience on a ride as Mason launches into his first mission, Bernard is captured, and Nadia and Mason are reunited.

How did Mason and Nadia lose their memories?

It wasn’t due to head injuries. Bernard “backstopped” them using the devices implanted under their skin. The move wiped their memories in order to protect Citadel and the work they’d done for the agency as spies.

Were Mason and Nadia able to get their memories back?

Unfortunately, Mason wasn’t able to recover his memories. The vial containing them was crushed during the attack he and Bernard suffered perpetuated by the Silje brothers after the two Citadel agents managed to get the X-case back into their custody.

Nadia was able to retrieve her memories. It happened in Valencia, Spain when one of the Silje brothers attacked her and Mason. The latter distracted their attacker long enough for her to be able to grab the vial and inject herself. She then proceeded to beat their attacker into submission so they could make their escape.

Why does Dahlia Archer want Bernard?

He’s a valuable asset. Bernard is Citadel’s tech genius and he was the handler for Mason and Nadia. He’s the key to getting the information Manticore needs to recover the X-case. Also, she wants to turn him. Apparently, Dahlia is not only skilled at getting agents to talk but also in recruiting them to Manticore.
