Reality, an HBO original film starring Sydney Sweeney, makes its television debut on Monday, May 29 at 10:05 p.m. ET.

The less than 90 minute movie is based on the 2019 play, “Is This A Room,” by Tina Satter who also directed and wrote the film. Its focus is on Reality Winner, a former intelligence specialist and Air Force vet who leaked classified information to the press about Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.

For the run of the film, the audience is brought into Winner’s interrogation by FBI agents at her home on June 3, 2017. Their often awkward interactions and uncomfortable back-and-forths are derived from the actual recording from that day which was later contrived. Viewers will become privy to Winner’s reasoning for her decision and what led her to share a “secret and need to know” document with the publication, The Intercept.

While this is a fictionalized account of events, it still paints a picture of what Winner experienced as a single woman with an all-male team of FBI agents raiding her home and questioning her (from their quirks to their dog loving sensibilities) as well as the anger she harbored as the U.S. continued to polarize in the wake of the election and the truth was being suppressed.

The real life Winner was sentenced to 5 years and three months in prison in August 2018. Here’s what we know about her in 2023.

Is Reality Winner still in prison?

No. According to NBC News, Winner was released from prison in June 2021 to a halfway house for good behavior and wasn’t pardoned or a part of the compassionate release process.

Where is Reality Winner now?

Winner lives in Corpus Christi, TX. According to her Instagram she’s a “CrossFit coach and dog mom. And cat mom. And horse mom.” She’ll be on probation until November 2024 and must adhere to a 10 p.m. ET curfew that lifts at 6 a.m.

In an interview with 3News, in Feb. 2023, spoke on her decision to leak classified information:

"I served the American people, and I served to defend the Constitution of the United States, and as someone who worked in military intelligence, there was the constant struggle of having to double-think everything; what I knew that was really going on, versus what the average American knew or understood. I don’t justify what I did, and even the best of intent can’t mask the fact that I did commit a serious crime.….If I felt that strongly about it in my conscience and was that troubled by the information I had seen, I would have found official ways within my agency to address it. However, I also would have spent some time in therapy working through the emotional issues and the pressures that were building up within me as a troubled citizen, as opposed to doing something rash and illegal."

Next. Euphoria season 3 is not coming in 2023 (or any time soon). dark
