Who won Barbecue Showdown season 2 (and where are they now)?
By Sabrina Reed
Barbecue Showdown season 2 saw competitors rising to the challenge as they grilled and cooked their tried and true dishes and tested out new ideas in the name of pushing the envelope. Ultimately, however, only two could make it to the finale and it turned out to be the competition’s best friends, Thyron “Big T” Mathews and Logan Sandoval.
The pair have wildly different styles of barbecuing, but they were amiable as teammates and good at blending Thyron’s traditional sensibilities with Logan’s fine dining innovations when they were a dynamic duo for a team challenge that decided the final three. But with Michelle Lundstrom’s elimination in the semi-finals, Thyron and Logan had to go head-to-head.
The season 2 finale saw the two being challenged to cook a whole hog, it was a task that Thryon was incredibly familiar with as it’s a family tradition to barbecue an entire pig and share it with the rest of the community. Logan had only cooked a whole hog once, and it was in a supportive capacity not as the lead, but he rose to the challenge.
Who did judges Kevin Bludso and Melissa Cookston choose as the best pitmaster in the competition? Here’s what we know!
Who won Barbecue Showdown season 2?
Thyron’s hog ultimately won out. The pitmaster had brought his Iowan flare to his cooking throughout season 2 as well as his big, warm personality. Thyron typically created a whole meal when he presented to the judges including a dessert. His dishes spoke to his family’s legacy and how long they’ve been barbecuing with recipes that date back a century. He won a total of $50,000 and a state of the art smoking machine.
Where is Thyron now?
Thyron’s dream was to retire from his career as a warden to focus on barbecue. While it’s unknown if he was able to do that we can share that he is the founder of T&T Barbecue, a company which sells rubs and sauces as well as caters. You can check out the site, here. He also posts tutorials and culinary content on Youtube.
