Yellowjackets season 3 release updates, cast, and everything we know so far

One of the most thrilling mystery series in recent years returned to Showtime for its second season earlier this year, providing fans with more head-scratching moments, shocking reveals, and an unexpected finale. Now, all eyes are on Yellowjackets season 3. What’s the latest with the next season and when might we be able to expect it to come out? We tell you everything we know so far about the highly anticipated third season below.

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets premiered in November 2021 and blew audiences away. Its gripping storyline and stellar cast, which includes Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, and Juliette Lewis, had audiences counting down the days until the next episode. We had so many questions at the conclusion of the first season, and the second season did give us some answers. Along with even more questions!

Yellowjackets season 3 is officially happening

After the success of the first season of Yellowjackets, it was a no-brainer that Showtime would renew the series for a second season. But more good news came in December 2022 when the show was renewed for a third season ahead of season 2’s premiere! At this time, we don’t know how long Yellowjackets will run for, but at least we know season 3 is definitely in the works.

As Yellowjackets season 3 will likely continue to follow the soccer team in the ’90s while out stranded in the wilderness alongside their modern-day stories, we expect the following cast members to return:

When Showtime announces the official cast list, we’ll be sure to update this post. At this time, we don’t know whether or not Juliette Lewis will reprise her role as the modern-day version of Natalie. As you’ll remember, she (seemingly) dies in the season 2 finale after saving Lisa and getting stabbed with a fatal injection by Misty. But is Natalie really dead? Or if she is, could she return in flashbacks? We’ll be on the lookout for answers while we wait for the third season to premiere.

Does Yellowjackets season 3 have a release date?

At the time of this writing, Yellowjackets season 3 does not have a confirmed release date. But that’s not surprising considering the second season wrapped up at the end of May. Season 2 was released about a year and two months after the first season concluded, so we know the writers’ room gets to work pretty quickly.

And while we know writing on the third season has begun, they are currently on pause because of the ongoing writers’ strike.

Yellowjackets season 3 is affected by the writers’ strike

Yup, that’s right. The Yellowjackets season 3 writers’ room got started for just one day before the strike began in May. Ashley Lyle took to Twitter on May 2 and noted the process was “amazing,” “creatively invigorating,” and “so much fun,” but of course as part of the Writers Guild of America, they had to stop.

There’s really no telling how long the strike will continue, and it’s all down to the studios to come back with a fair deal for the writers. Just this week, it was announced that several Disney titles have been pushed back due to the strike. We expect this trend to continue until it’s over. Fortunately, we can expect the writers to get back to Yellowjackets season 3 once they’re able to start working again.

Yellowjackets season 2 ending explained

Back in the ’90s, the season 2 finale sees the girls bringing Javi’s dead body back to the cabin to begin to cook him. Remember, he falls into the frozen lake and dies in the previous episode. Travis is absolutely devastated at losing his brother, however, he decides to give in to the wilderness and takes a bite out of Travis’ heart. Lottie names Natalie as the new leader of the wilderness, while Coach Ben is still extremely alarmed at everything going on and seemingly burns down the cabin.

In the present-day storyline, the ladies are still at Lottie’s wellness commune and decide to go along with her ritual so they can trick her and try to have her committed to a psychiatric hospital. Now that Walter knows what happened to Adam, he teams up with Jeff to frame Kevyn for his murder. Walter is truly a ride-or-die for Misty, helping her clean up all of her dirty laundry.

At the end of the season 2 finale, Nat decides to sacrifice her own life for Lisa when Misty comes at her with a syringe containing a fatal substance. Lottie is eventually taken away by a crisis team after being shot by Callie and telling everyone that Natalie was the wilderness’ favorite.

The biggest moment to come out of the Yellowjackets season 2 finale, of course, is Natalie’s death.

What could Yellowjackets season 3 be about?

Natalie’s death will no doubt play a big part in Yellowjackets season 3. We’ll also continue to see what happened to the girls out in the wilderness, especially now that the cabin’s up in flames. And depending on how long the show will go for, we even might see them get rescued.

In the present day, Misty and Walter will likely continue their relationship and get into more true crime investigations together, while Shauna is free from the murder case. For now, at least. We’ll hopefully be getting more from Taissa and Van as well. Am I the only one shipping them?

We can’t wait until we get the first look and trailer for the third season so we can speculate some more on what’ll go down.
