Yellowstone on the Paramount Network is one of the most popular shows around. There’s no doubt about that! The Taylor Sheridan-created series has been a success over on Paramount. In September 2023, its parent network, CBS, tried its hand at the show. And it was a success. And so, Yellowstone season 2 is coming to CBS!

It’s not a surprise as both the writers strike (now resolved) and the actors strike (still ongoing) has forced networks to change plans when it comes to the fall 2023 schedule. CBS released their new one, which includes many reality shows, reruns, and surprise premieres like this.

Here’s all you need to know about the show in general, as well as the release schedule of Yellowstone on CBS season 2 on the network!

Yellowstone on CBS season 2 premiere date and release schedule

Yellowstone season 1 on CBS began airing Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023. The network released its fall 2023 schedule, sharing that Yellowstone would premiere starting with season 1 episode 1 that day. After the first day, two episodes from the first season aired back-to-back. The finale of season 1’s nine-episode season aired on Oct. 22.

And now with season 2 debuting on CBS as well, the same release schedule is in place. We shared when you need to tune in to Yellowstone season 2 on CBS below:

What the Western is about and cast list

The neo-Western drama is centered around the Dutton family, led by patriarch John Dutton. They own the largest ranch in Montana, and largest contiguous ranch in the U.S. With that, comes multiple challenges. John is surrounded by politicians who are more interested in oil and lumber corporations, greedy developers, and the property is in “constant conflict” with those it borders, per the synopsis. Those include an expanding town, the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, and Yellowstone National Park.

In the season 2 premiere, Kayce will settle into his new role at the ranch, John is at risk of being exposed after a “damaging article” comes out, and Rainwater has a new plan that he wants to propose to the tribal council, per the synopsis.

Yellowstone filming locations and where to watch

According to Esquire, seasons 1 to 3 were mostly filmed on sound stages in Utah. Only a fourth of filming time was actually in Montana. But once production on season 4 came around, things changed. Now, filming locations include a 40,000 square-foot space in Missoula, Montana and The Crow Indian Reservation just outside of Billings, Montana. What about the infamous home? It’s a real place! The Chief Joseph Ranch is located in Darby, Montana and that’s what serves as the ranch in the series. You can visit it and rent two cabins there.

Due to a streaming rights deal, the first four seasons of the Western drama, as well as season 5 part 1, are streaming on Peacock. Since the show is originally a Paramount Network production, you may have thought it’s on Paramount+. But that’s not the case. Peacock costs $5.99/month with ads or $11.99/month without ads.

Yellowstone season 5 and beyond

There’s a total of five seasons of the show. The series first debuted in June 2018 on the Paramount Network. The fifth season is a total of 14 episodes, which has been divided into two parts. The first half premiered in November 2022, with episode 8 streaming on Jan. 1, 2023. Since then, fans have been waiting for Yellowstone season 5 part 2 to come out.

Season 1 had nine episodes, with seasons 2-4 each consisting of 10 installments. The fifth season got an increase with a total of 14 episodes. So by the time season 5 part 2 rolls around, the show will consist of a total of 53 episodes.

Yellowstone season 5 is the last. So when the last batch of episodes premiere on the Paramount Network, that’s when it will be time to say goodbye to the series (premiere date news below). But for those of you checking it out on CBS, you still have a while to go until you reach that point. It’s still unknown whether CBS will continue airing the rest of the seasons after season 2. We’ll have to wait and see!

Is Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 out yet? (When is Season 5 episode 9 coming out?)

The new episodes aren’t out yet. Yellowstone season 5 part 2 was expected to premiere in November 2023 on the Paramount Network. However with the ongoing writers strike and now the actors strike as well, the release date has been pushed. Taylor Sheridan had stopped writing the new episodes when the writers strike began, and not all of the scripts were finished before the strike, according to Yahoo!news. Now with the actors on strike as well, this has further delayed the debut of the episodes. Plus, behind-the-scenes issues with Kevin Costner also created delays.

Filming hasn’t even started on the final batch of installments yet. However on Nov. 2, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter shared that the final six episodes will premiere in November 2024 on The Paramount Network.

Are there Yellowstone spin-offs?

There are multiple spin-offs of the original series! We shared them below:

  • 1883 (prequel, ten-episode miniseries, streaming on Paramount+)
  • 1923 (prequel, renewed for season 2, streaming on Paramount+)
  • Untitled sequel series potentially starring Matthew McConaughey (set to premiere in December 2023)
  • 6666 (spin-off in the works)
  • 1944 (working title, prequel in the works)
  • 2024 (working title)

For the current spin-offs that are out, which are 1883 and 1923, you don’t necessarily have to watch Yellowstone to enjoy them. That’s because they’re both prequels, so they take place in a completely different timeline, years before the events of the original show. The same also applies to Lawmen: Bass Reeves and 1944. However when the untitled sequel series and 6666 come around, you’ll probably want to have watched the original series first. That’s because 6666 is set in the present day, and the untitled series is a sequel.
