Is Matthew McConaughey in Yellowstone on the Paramount Network?

The topic of the second half of Yellowstone season 5 episodes has been kind of a hot mess with mixed news coming out since February 2023. At that time, Deadline reported the series was ending, while Entertainment Weekly said the opposite. It was also rumored actor Matthew McConaughey is joining the Western universe.

In February, Deadline shared that the drama could be coming to an end following season 5. The reason for this is because of Dutton patriarch, actor Kevin Costner, reportedly asking for less shooting time to focus on his film, Horizon. Costner’s attorney, Marty Singer, said the actor asking to shoot season 5 for only one week is “an absolute lie,” per TVLine. The news outlet reached out to Paramount and the company responded they have “no news to report.”

Well now in May 2023, we finally have an update. Yellowstone season 5 is officially the final season for the series. Season 5 part 2 was originally supposed to air sometime in summer 2023, however the cameras haven’t even started rolling yet and it now has a November 2023 release date. Production could potentially start up in August, per Deadline.

However the news outlet isn’t sure if all the scripts of the Taylor Sheridan series have been written yet, which could be delayed with the current WGA strike. It’s also not known whether Costner will be reprising his role in the final episodes.

There’s a lot happening with the original series, and one thing in question is whether McConaughey may somehow be involved in the Yellowstone world. Is he?

The Oscar winning actor is not going to pop in at the Yellowstone Ranch when the back half of season 5 returns. However, it might be possible that the star is going to lead his own story in the franchise with an already confirmed third spin-off.

The new, untitled show has been greenlit, getting a straight-to-series order. Paramount hasn’t provided the cast list yet, but Deadline reports the actor is still in talks to headline the show, as of May 5, 2023. It’s also expected that some of the original cast members from Yellowstone will join him. The spin-off will air on the Paramount Network and also be available to watch on Paramount+ (unlike Yellowstone which airs on the network but streams on Peacock) sometime in December 2023.
