Euphoria season 3 is still a long, long way off: Here’s everything we know

Back in February 2022, the Euphoria season 2 finale left us with so many questions. Needless to say, season 3 can’t get here soon enough. But as more and more time goes by without positive updates, fans are understandably growing impatient. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we’re going to be waiting a very long time until we see what happens next.

During a press conference on Thursday, Nov. 2, HBO boss Casey Bloys provided updates on a long list of their original shows amid the actors’ strike. According to him, we won’t be seeing Euphoria season 3 until 2025, which is so disappointing. Other shows pushed back to 2025 include The White Lotus season 3 and The Last of Us season 2. What terrible news!

At this point, we understand why many fans are saying Euphoria season 3 should be canceled. As we wait over a year now for the next installment, here’s everything else we’ve learned about the production status, cast, and more.

Filming has not begun on season 3

Originally, reports claimed the new season would begin production in early 2023, with some publications noting a February 2023 start. However, in a Feb. 2023 interview with Vogue, actress Maude Apatow clarified that was not the case. According to Apatow, filming for season 3 was slated to begin in the “latter half of 2023.”

“I honestly don’t know a single thing,” Apatow said earlier this year. “We should be getting scripts and hearing about next season soon-ish, but I’m totally in the dark!”

We assume the writers’ and actors’ strikes have pushed back this plan. At the time of this writing, we don’t know if scripts have been completed for season 3, but we know that if they are, the actors cannot film anything anyway. We expect filming to begin sometime in 2024, hopefully, depending on the actors’ strike.

HBO Executive Francesca Orsi spoke to Deadline in May and gave us bad news ahead of Casey Bloys’ recent confirmation, saying a 2025 release date was probable:

"“Euphoria is one of those that we had begun writing in tandem with post-production on Idol but at this point, we don’t have countless scripts,” Orsi shared. “We can’t start shooting, so the delivery of that show — ideally in 2025 — will be determined on when we can pick back up with Sam, who at this point is all pencils down and just finishing posts on Idol.”"

Looking back at the release of the first two seasons, it’s hard to predict the release date for season 3 considering the COVID delays. The first season of the HBO hit series premiered on June 16, 2019, and season 2 on January 9, 2022. The pandemic happened right in the middle of the seasons, so this hurt filming, pushing production back by a lot longer than anyone expected.

Cancellation rumors

It seems like the longer we wait for the new season, the more rumors start to pop up claiming the show’s canceled. Well, fortunately, we know that’s not the case because HBO just confirmed it’ll be back in 2025. A site called Koimoi reported the rumor, citing an Instagram share from DeuxMoi, the anonymous celebrity gossip account. According to the blind item, Sam Levinson is supposedly in trouble with HBO, and Euphoria season 3 allegedly would no longer happen.

As troubling as that might be to read, we’re here to remind everyone that HBO does not confirm this. Although some blind items sent to DeuxMoi end up being true, we really have no reason to believe this rumor at this time. We’ll keep an ear out for any other rumors, but for now, don’t trust this rumor.

Season 3 cast

Sadly, Euphoria actor Angus Cloud passed away in July 2023 at the age of 25. Cloud would’ve likely returned as Fez in the third season of the series.

In addition to Cloud, we know another major cast member of Euphoria will not be returning for season 3, and that’s Barbie Ferreira. The 26-year-old actress brought one of our favorite characters Kat to life in the first two seasons, but she announced in summer 2022 that she would be departing. Rumors swirled about potential drama behind the scenes, especially involving creator Sam Levinson, but none of that has been confirmed.

We also don’t expect Javon “Wanna” Walton to return to Euphoria for season 3 unless it’s for flashbacks, because there’s no way Ashtray survived that shooting in the season 2 finale. We loved him and will be sad to have a new season without him.

Singer Dominic Fike was a newcomer to Euphoria season 2 in the role of Elliot, and he confirmed during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that he’ll be back for season 3.

At the time of this writing, we’re expecting the following actors to reprise their roles for season 3, though this is subject to change:

  • Zendaya as Rue
  • Hunter Schafer as Jules
  • Jacob Elordi as Nate
  • Alexa Demie as Maddy
  • Sydney Sweeney as Cassie
  • Maude Apatow as Lexi
  • Storm Reid as Gia
  • Dominic Fike as Elliot
  • Colman Domingo as Ali

Season 2 finale recap

Rue is getting her life back in the Euphoria season 2 finale. Sober Rue is the best Rue! We did not need that song from Elliot interrupting the episode, but we’ll forgive this because we know that Zendaya and Labrinth wrote this song. However! Let’s not be so quick to forget that Rue could still be in real trouble with Laurie. But we’ll worry about that when the time comes. At the moment, we have bigger worries. Yes, I’m talking about Fezco.

Chloe Cherry’s Faye came through for us! She helped Fez out. Unfortunately, Ash stabs first and asks questions later, which ruined everything for Fez. Fezco is likely going to be doing jail time, but I don’t think he will be taking the blame for Custer now that Ash is dead.

Lexi’s play is now over and although it was extremely entertaining, not all of the audience members were amused. Cassie and Maddy got into a screaming match and the friend group is in shambles.

What’s next for Euphoria season 3?

In the new season, we’re expecting more ups and downs for Rue as she continues working through her sobriety. Hopefully, she and Jules will be in a good place, but we don’t expect peace for long on a show like this.

We don’t see Cassie and Nate lasting long, especially now that they’ve seen the play and Cassie is still feuding with Maddy. It’s a doomed relationship and they’re incredibly toxic. I’m hoping all three are single in Euphoria season 3, but I doubt that’ll be the case!

It’ll be interesting to find out how they write Kat’s character out of the third season. We’re seriously going to miss her!

There are so many questions about Euphoria season 3, who will be in the season, when it will be released, and if it will even happen. Of course, as soon as we learn more about Euphoria season 3, we’ll update this post! Another thing I know fans would love to see happen in season 3 is more episodes. The first two seasons have included eight episodes each, but it would be great to get a 10-episode third season.
