Chicago Med was renewed for season 9 in 2022, and though it was likely planned that the new season would premiere in September or October 2023, the show will not be coming out this year after all. Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. will also not be releasing new episodes in 2023.

Writers rooms for television shows that premiere in the fall typically start in late spring, which is exactly when the Writers Guild of America began its strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Because Chicago Med is produced by a struck company (Universal Television), the writers have not been working as they wait for negotiations for a new contract. And now with the Screen Actors Guild also on strike, the actors working on Chicago Med will not able to film until they have a new contract as well.

NBC has released its fall television general schedule, and on Wednesday nights in 2023, the network will be airing reruns of the One Chicago shows at 8pm, followed by new episodes for Quantum Leap season 2 at 9pm, and Magnum P.I. season 5 part 2 at 10pm.

If you’re wondering why NBC will have new episodes of other drama series on Wednesday nights but not new episodes for Chicago Med Season 9, it’s because of the production schedules differing. These other drama series with new episodes were able to be written and filmed prior to the start of the respective strikes for the shows’ writers and actors.

When will Chicago Med Season 9 air?

It is unknown at this time when Chicago Med season 9 will premiere, and it will largely depend on when the AMPTP is able to negotiate a fair deal with both unions to finalize new contract agreements and end the strikes. Once the writers room is able to start again, it would take at least several weeks before filming could begin, with air dates following on NBC in the months after.

For season 8, Chicago Med started filming in mid-July and began airing episodes in late September. So we could expect a similar window of about two months between when the season goes in production and when it’ll air. That being said, NBC may adjust air dates however they see fit to best align with their calendar and other series.
