These days, page-to-screen adaptations are a dime a dozen as best-sellers become blockbusters and shows we can’t stop bingeing. This summer, there’s one particular adaptation coming to our screens that will have everyone full of love: Red, White and Royal Blue.

Casey McQuiston’s queer romance novel of the same name was released in May 2019 and became a runaway hit. By August of the same year, Amazon Studios nabbed the rights to the movie with Greg Berlanti on board to produce. The movie was co-written and directed by Matthew Lopez, the Tony Award-winning playwright making his directorial debut.

From the release date to the cast to the photos depicting the pivotal cake-destroying scene, we’re sharing everything to know about the romantic comedy!

Red, White and Royal Blue release date

The wait is nearly over! The Red, White and Royal Blue movie will be released on Friday, Aug. 11 on Amazon Prime Video. Since it’s an exclusive to the streamer, you won’t be able to watch the movie anywhere else and will need an Amazon Prime subscription to watch. It’s sure to be one of the most popular and talked about streaming movies of the summer!

Red, White and Royal Blue release time

Although fans know that the movie will be released on Friday, Aug. 11, Amazon Prime Video will be releasing the movie at 12 a.m. GMT. That’s great news for viewers in the United States, as the film will begin streaming at 8 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. PT, which is early enough to have a movie night on Thursday, Aug. 10. Red, White and Royal Blue Rotten Tomatoes score

On Aug. 10, reviews started pouring in for the film adaptation. As expected, the reviews have been mostly positive, and the movie debuted to an 86% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as of midday on Aug. 10. Of course, that rating could still change as more reviews are factored into its score. The audience score will surely be much higher, as it’s deserving of an even 100% rating.

Can you watch Red, White and Royal Blue free on Prime?

As of its release date, the movie can’t be watched free on Prime unless you are an Amazon Prime subscriber. In order to watch RWRB on Prime, you must have a subscription. It remains to be seen whether they could temporarily stream it for free with ads on Freevee, as they did with select episodes of the hit series The Summer I Turned Pretty, but don’t bet on that happening anytime soon. If you’re not already a Prime subscriber, a free trial could be your next option.

How long is Red, White and Royal Blue?

According to Prime Video, Red, White and Royal Blue has a total runtime of 1 hour and 58 minutes, which is just under 2 hours in length. For some fans, that won’t be enough time with Alex and Henry and they will wish it was an eight-episode limited series. However, it’s six minutes longer than the initial reported runtime of 1 hour and 52 minutes, so that’s a win.

Red, White and Royal Blue full trailer

Is June in the Red, White and Royal Blue movie?

One of the most asked questions leading up to the release of movie is whether Alex’s older sister June will be featured in the movie. So far, an actress hasn’t been announced to play June Claremont-Diaz in the movie, leading to the suspicion that the character and third member of the White House Trio might have been omitted from the film altogether. It’s possible June was cut from the cast to make the storytelling tighter, but we’ll have to wait and see if she simply plays a minor role in the film or just receives a slight mention.

What is the Red, White and Royal Blue movie about?

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston, the movie follows the same premise as the book. The rivalry of the First Son of the United States and the Prince of Wales comes to a shocking and public head, taking their relationship down a complicated but thrilling romantic road neither of them could have predicted.

Check out the film’s official synopsis via Amazon Studios:

"Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the first woman President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity…and a total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time. Going into damage control mode, their powerful families and respective handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected."

Will there be a Red, White and Royal Blue movie tie-in book?

Yes! In addition to the paperback and hardcover releases McQuiston’s book has already received, there will also be a Red, White and Royal Blue movie tie-in book. The new edition of the book, which features the movie’s poster with Galitzine and Zakhar Perez on the cover, will be released wherever books are sold on Tuesday, July 4. Isn’t that a fitting release date?!

Is Red, White and Royal Blue a movie or series?

Going into the adaptation this summer, some fans of the book who haven’t been following along with the production might be wondering if it’s a standalone movie or a 10-episode series. As much as we would all like to spend as much time with Alex and Henry as possible, the adaptation is a movie that has a 1 hour and 52-minute running time.
