Hunchback of Notre Dame live-action remake release updates and everything we know so far

Back in 2019, Disney announced a live-action adaptation of their classic animated film, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, which got fans excited. However, there hasn’t been much information revealed about the project since then, leaving fans eagerly anticipating any updates.

However, we have been hearing rumors from behind the scenes that suggest things may not be progressing as smoothly as we had hoped…

The animated classic, originally inspired by Victor Hugo’s literary gem, Notre Dame de Paris, etched its unforgettable mark within the illustrious tapestry of the “Disney Renaissance” during the vibrant 1990s. It transported audiences into a world where Quasimodo’s gentle spirit and endearing nature captured hearts while amassing an impressive $300 million at the global box office.

Join us as we lift the curtain and reveal the closely kept secrets of the live-action adaptation of Hunchback of Notre Dame. Keep reading to discover all the latest details we have uncovered about this project!

What is Hunchback of Notre Dame about?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a story about a deformed bell-ringer named Quasimodo who lives in the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He is shunned by society because of his appearance and is kept hidden away by his guardian, the cruel Judge Claude Frollo. Quasimodo falls in love with a kind and beautiful gypsy named Esmeralda, who is also the object of Frollo’s obsession. The story follows Quasimodo’s journey to protect Esmeralda from Frollo’s wrath and to find acceptance in a society that has rejected him.

According to Movie Web, the live-action remake of The Hunchback of Notre Dame was supposed to follow a similar plot to the original animated film. However, there may have been some changes to the story and characters to fit the live-action format.

Hunchback of Notre Dame remake updates

Despite the initial anticipation surrounding its reported release on July 19, 2024, it is with a heavy heart that we share the disheartening news: the live-action rendition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which once held promise, is likely being pushed back — if it’s happening at all.

It’s been alleged that the reason for the sudden halt in production of the live-action version of Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame can be traced back to Bob Iger’s reported unfavorable opinion of the original animated film. While there is still a possibility for the project to be revived in the future, for now, the highly anticipated transformation of the beloved classic has been put on hold.

As Parade reports, though the release date has been shared, we don’t see the movie coming out in time for next summer.

We must accept that the journey to bring Quasimodo and his world to the big screen has hit an unexpected roadblock. We’ll be sure to update this post once we hear more information!
