The Irrational premieres Monday, Sept. 25 on NBC. The new procedural drama follows Alec Mercer, a Behavioral Science professor whose expertise is world renowned. Mercer’s strength is using why humans do certain things as a means of de-escalating high stakes situations and solving cases in which circumstantial evidence is adding up to the wrong conclusions.
The professor, with the help of his students and lab assistants, conducts case studies that put reason to the casework he’s involved in with law enforcement that ranges from local police to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. And he does so not just from the comfort of his lab but also out in the field questioning potential suspects and gleaning information from key figures that could be exactly what he needs to solve a crime.
The show is set stateside, but was it actually filmed in America? Here’s what we know!
Where was The Irrational filmed?
In the pilot episode of The Irrational, we’re introduced to Alec Mercer as he assists the FBI on a case in Virginia. This isn’t a one-off as the Behavioral Science professor also drives a red, sporty car with Virginia license plates and works at Wylton University which is located in the state as well. However, filming didn’t take place in Virginia or in the DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) metro area or even in the United States for that matter.
According to Hollywood North Buzz, filming took place in Canada, specifically Vancouver. Lead actor Jesse L. Martin knows the city well as it was the site of production for The CW’s The Flash, too. The outlet reports filming on the NBC series began in Spring 2023 and ran through to July, ending as the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike went into effect. There’s a total of 10 episodes in the season.
Is Wylton University a real place?
No. Wylton University is a fictional school on The Irrational. The University of British Columbia in Vancouver is the stand-in for the institution. An image was shared on the university’s Reddit page showing a Wylton map on campus last year.
