Our favorite vigilantes return in 2024!: The Boys season 4 release date and more
The Boys first debuted on our screens in 2019, and we are so grateful for the fact that Prime Video brought this awesome superhero series to life from the comic book of the same name! Since the show began, it’s received a huge following and definitely for good reason. And now, we await The Boys season 4!
The show was created by Eric Kripke and follows a team of vigilantes, a.k.a. the Boys, who are the real heroes of the story. That’s because superheroes in this universe are morally corrupt and abuse their powers. And this group has had enough, deciding they need to do something about the power-hungry superheroes and the multi-billion dollar corporation that cleans up their messes. There’s so much more to tell in The Boys season 4. Here’s everything we know about the next chapter in the story!
The Boys season 4 premieres Thursday, June 13, 2024 on Prime Video. The first three episodes will be released on premiere day, followed by one new installment weekly until the finale on Thursday, July 18, 2024. There's a total of eight episodes.
Did the strikes delay season 4?
Although the cast and crew wrapped filming on The Boys season 4 in April 2023, per the show’s official Twitter account, it seems like the new season was delayed. And that’s because showrunner Eric Kripke was supporting the writers’ strike and confirmed they wouldn't release the new season until that’s over. He shared this news in a social media post from late June 2023.
The good news though is that the guild and studios have come to an agreement! That means the writers strike is over, and the writers have gone back to work. Membersvoted and ratified the new contract, which is in effect through May 1, 2026. In case you didn’t know, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike on May 2, 2023.
And now we have even better news! Starting on Nov. 9, 2023, the actors strike has now ended as well! The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have come to an agreement as well.
Although The Boys season 4 had been written and filmed already, Kripke stood with writers and that’s probably the main reason why the release of the new season was held. The last time we saw new episodes was July 2022. After the strikes were resolved, this allowed the writers to work on the final touches of the season. Kirpke explained in a post that even though they finished filming, there’s work that needs to be done in post-production. For example, extra dialogue the writers have to write for the actors to voice, that couldn't be done amid the strikes:
What’s next in the new season? (Cast and story)
Kripke teased what fans might be able to expect from Ryan in the upcoming season, commenting on the decision to end season 3 with a cliffhanger. In an interview with E! News in July 2022, he explained: “That was a hint that Ryan’s soul is at risk and he has to be saved because if it doesn’t he’s really going to go in a dark place.”
As for Billy Butcher in season 4, Kripke shared: “Butcher has a very limited amount of time to live and in that time, he needs to figure out how to save Ryan, how to get rid of Homelander, how to deal with Newman. He has a lot on his plate.” “A lot of the season will be a battle over Ryan,” Kripke continued, “because if Homelander ends up raising and influencing the kids that’s basically a second Homelander with apocalyptic stakes.”
Prime Video shared the synopsis, which we provided below:
"The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."
There’s so much up in the air going into the fourth installment and we can’t wait to see how it all turns out. One thing we can expect is the return of cast members we love, as well as the introduction of some new faces. We shared them below:

Where to watch the superhero series
The Boys season 4 will be available to stream exclusively on Prime Video as it’s an Amazon Studios series. There will be a total of eight episodes. All three finished seasons are currently available to watch online on the streamer as well. If you have an Amazon Prime account for your shopping needs, then Prime Video is automatically part of what you pay for. If you don’t, then it costs $14.99/month. If you’re interested in just getting Prime Video, then it would be $8.99/month. The streamer has recently introduced ads, and it will cost an additional $2.99 to your subscription to go with no ads.
If you head back to Prime Video and need a refresher, by the end of The Boys season 3, Homelander and Ryan reconcile. But elsewhere, Homelander kills Noir because he was hiding that he’s Soldier Boy’s son. We also find out Butcher is sick because of his V24 use, Annie decides to join the group of vigilantes, Soldier Boy is in custody, Neuman decides to run for vice president, and Homelander murders someone for attacking Ryan.
The future of the show and franchise
At the time of this writing, we don’t know if a fifth season has been 100% confirmed. However, according to Collider, Kripke did say there are plans to produce more seasons of the superhero show, meaning there could still be more story to tell. We’d be surprised if a fifth installment didn’t happen.
There are two spinoffs of The Boys. The first is the 2022 animated series, The Boys: Diabolical. The anthology series illustrates stories set within the universe and is now streaming on Prime Video.
The other spinoff is Gen V , which takes place in America’s only superhero college, run by Vought International, that is exclusively for young superheroes, per the synopsis. The show streamed on Prime Video and just released its finale. The series has already been renewed for a season 2!
