It has been over five years since Hereditary premiered and we still think about it from time to time. The Ari Aster supernatural horror is a slow burn for sure, but the wait for the dark and sinister horror that awaits us in the final moments of the movie are worth it every minute. To say that we would love a chilling sequel to this story is an understatement. But is it ever happening?

Hereditary premiered in theaters in June 2018, kicking off the summer with sheer terror. Aster’s debut feature changed the game for the horror genre, setting a new bar that, honestly, not many movies have come close to reaching (only Talk to Me comes to mind, my personal favorite movie so far this year).

Another chapter of Hereditary can be a sequel, for all we care! We just want to horror to continue, as well as getting some answers about the final scenes. What are the chances of a sequel happening? And would it be soon or are we in for a long wait?

Is there going to be a Hereditary sequel?

Earlier this year, while promoting Beau Is Afraid, Aster was asked if A24 had approached him about sequels to Midsommar and/or Hereditary. The director’s response? It’s not full of hope. All Aster offers is, “I have an idea for a sequel to Hereditary… Who knows if I’ll ever do it.”

Well, come on, Aster! If you don’t know, than no one else does, and we need to have something to look forward to these days. We’re not giving up, though. After all, it’s not like Aster’s response was a harsh “no.” If he has an idea, A24 may just pick it up once Aster has time to do it.

At the box office, Hereditary reached over $80 million, becoming A24’s highest-grossing film at that time. The movie has since been dethroned from the spot by Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022. It stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, and others.

The movie is streaming on Max for your viewing pleasure. Will you be rewatching the movie this spooky season?
