Updated: Oct. 16, 2023 – For All Mankind season 4 is almost here! We’ve been anticipating returning to the Apple TV+’s thanks to the series ending its third season on a game changer. Since it’s launch in 2019 as one of the streamer’s first shows, the sci-fi drama has captivated us. It’s one of the platform’s biggest draws. This is, of course, due to it’s alternate history.

The show imagines a world in which the Soviet Union landed a man on the moon in 1969 and not the United States. This change put the country on a new trajectory, one that saw Ted Kennedy and then Gary Hart become the President, as well as the country diving into a new space race with the USSR. For All Mankind‘s dramatic twist in its season 3 finale, had us clamoring for season 4. Need a refresher before we share what’s set to happen in the fourth season? Here’s what happened!

Caution: This article has SPOILERS for the season 3 finale of For All Mankind

The season 3 finale, “Stranger in a Strange Land,” had the world rocked by the discovery that, of all places, North Korea managed to land a man on Mars before anyone else. Danny confessed that the drilling accident was his fault, so the crew exiled him to the North Korean capsule on Mars. Ed managed to get Kelly back to Earth so she could give birth to her child safely.

Meanwhile, coming out as gay in this alternate 1995 had President Ellen facing impeachment. Ironically, her best bet was the fact the Democrats preferred her to deal with than her VP, but she faced an inquiry into her past.

The dramatic moment had Jimmy realizing too late that his anti-NASA friends were truly radical in bombing the Johnson Space Center, killing dozens, including Karen. Molly saved a few people but died of her wounds, and the Space Center was renamed in her honor. The final shot showed Sergei managing to defect to the U.S. before a time jump to 2003 showed Margo living in a still-standing USSR.

That was a wild finale, but how will it lead into season 4? According to the official synopsis via Apple TV+:

"Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since season three, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards."

As you can see from the synopsis and the For All Mankind season 4 trailer, the show will once more do a time skip, this time into the 2000s. It’s likely to follow the formula of an opening montage showing what’s happened in this alternate world, leading to the question of what major events from the last decade of the 20th century into the first few years of the millennium still took place in this alternate history.

Who stars in For All Mankind season 4?

Sadly, with Karen and Molly confirmed dead, Shantel VanSanten and Sonya Walger are both gone from the series. Joel Kinneman is back as Ed, likely under more aging makeup to reflect the character’s age in the 2000s.

New cast members will include Toby Kebbell as Miles, an oil worker who travels to work on Mars; Daniel Stern as the new head of NASA; and Tyner Rushing as an astronaut.

  • Joel Kinnaman as Edward “Ed” Baldwin
