All the Yellowstone spin-off shows (and their uninspired titles)
If there’s one thing Taylor Sheridan has achieved, that’s creating and maintaining successful Yellowstone spin-off shows! He’s definitely a rockstar creator. When you think about it, many times sequels, prequels, and spin-offs just don’t hit like a flagship series. But that’s definitely not the case when it comes to the Yellowstone world!
For those of you anxiously waiting for Yellowstone season 5 part 2, which will be the end of the popular series, unfortunately we’re going to have to wait much longer for the debut of the final episodes. The last six episodes of Yellowstone season 5 part 2 will premiere in November 2024, per Variety. The season had premiered in November 2022, and episode 8 came out in January 2023.
The show was supposed to return in November 2023, however the Hollywood strikes as well as behind-the-scenes issues with Kevin Costner led to production delays. And now, it’s rumored Costner won’t even be coming back for the final episodes. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
As we wait for the conclusion of the flagship series, there are a couple of spin-offs already out there and more coming. So you might need a hand at keeping track of them all. And that’s what I’m here for! At the time of this writing on Nov. 6, 2023, there’s a total of five Yellowstone spin-off shows. There’s prequels 1883, 1923, and 1944; as well as 2024 and 6666. As you can guess from the titles, three are prequels, while the other two are sequels. We listed them all below:
Yellowstone spin-off shows:
- 1883
- 1923
- 1944
- 2024
- 6666
Sheridan is an executive producer on new Paramount+ series Lawmen: Bass Reeves. And at first, the show was billed to be a part of the Yellowstone universe. However, it’s actually a standalone and not part of the Montana-based Western series. And honestly, it doesn’t have to be, though we do recommend checking it out. Clearly there’s plenty of story when it comes to the Dutton family! So what’s the status of all of these Western dramas? What do we know about them? Read on below to find out the latest updates!
The latest updates about the Yellowstone spin-off shows
1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story
Status: Miniseries that went on for one season, no plans for more (streaming on Paramount+)
The very first Yellowstone spin-off was 1883, which premiered in 2021. The 10-episode series starred Tim McGraw as James Dutton, Faith Hill as Margaret Dutton, Isabel May as Elsa Dutton, and Sam Elliott as Shea Brennan. Taking place in the titular year, we see how this generation of the Dutton’s in the Old West are now looking for a home following the Civil War. They journey from Tennessee, Fort Worth, Texas, Oregon, and finally find their way to Montana where they eventually establish the Yellowstone Ranch. James Dutton is John Dutton III’s (Kevin Costner) great-great-grandfather. The show only went on for one season, and there’s no plans to extend it.
1923
Status: One season out (streaming on Paramount+), season 2 in the works but delayed due to actors strike
Another prequel to Yellowstone is 1923, which premiered in December 2022. The show serves as a sequel to 1883 and sees Isabel May reprise her role as Elsa Dutton as Narrator of the story. The first season had a total of eight episodes and features Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, and Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton. The series focuses on the family during the Western Expansion, Prohibition Era, and the Great Depression. Jacob Dutotn is James Dutton’s brother (from 1883) and John Dutton III’s great-great uncle.
The second season is currently in the works, with plans for the main cast to reprise their respective roles. Season 2 will also have eight episodes, and will serve as the final season of the prequel series. Currently, filming and production on 1923 season 2 is delayed due to the ongoing actors strike.
1944 (working title)
Status: Confirmed by Paramount, filming hasn’t started yet
On Nov. 2, 2023, it was announced by Variety that the Paramount Network greenlit two Yellowstone spin-offs: 1944 and 2024 (which we get into below). Since the actors strike is still going on, no filming will be happening at the moment. Though since the writers strike is over, they may be getting hard to work on scripts. No release date, plot details, or cast have been announced yet. It’s still unclear whether the new show will be available to watch on Paramount+ like its predecessors or the Paramount Network like Yellowstone.
2024 (working title)
Status: Confirmed by Paramount, filming hasn’t started yet
The same day 1944 was announced to be coming, Paramount also shared that a sequel to Yellowstone, 2024, has been made official. We previously got news that a new project was in the works, reportedly starring Matthew McConaughey in the lead role. Here’s what Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement per Variety:
"On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon – thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan."
No release date, plot details, or cast have been announced yet. However, we do know that Paramount plans to have 2024 debut after Yellowstone season 5 part 2 comes to an end, according to Variety. So it’s likely we may get the new show in December 2024. The news outlet also shares that there will be new cast members coming aboard, with some familiar faces reprising their roles. We may be at new locations as well.
6666
Status: Unknown, possibly on hold
We were first introduced to the 6666 Ranch in Yellowstone season 4, and saw it once again in the first half of Yellowstone season 5. In February 2021, it was announced that the spin-off, 6666, was greenlit. However since then, there haven’t been many updates and details about the show. And it seems like for the time being, work on the series has been put on hold, according to Sheridan in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The Western is supposed to take place in the modern day “where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing,” Town & Country shares. So right now we don’t have a release date, plot details, or a confirmed cast.
Why we don’t like the Yellowstone spin-off titles
Alright, this may be a hot take and please don’t come after me! While it’s been proven that the Yellowstone spin-offs have been hugely successful, and I expect nothing less from all the upcoming projects coming, the team really could be a bit more creative with their series titles. Don’t get me wrong, I love the shows. But can we have something other than the decades as titles?
I understand wanting to stay consistent with the pattern of 1883 and 1923, using the decades to indicate what the story focuses on. But, it’s becoming kind of repetitive. It would be so much more fun if we had some more creative titles, especially with the sequels in the modern day – 2024 and 6666. Though the upcoming new shows are on working titles now. So maybe the team will surprise us! It might be a silly thing to be complaining about. But if you think about it, it’s the titles of shows and movies that grab an audience’s attention and is the first thing we notice about a project. What do you think?
