Updated Nov. 22, 2023 – One of the best shows to come out of the 2023 midseason schedule was Alert: Missing Persons Unit! The series first debuted on our screens in January. And after the big reveal we got at the end of the season, we definitely want to know what happens next in Alert season 2!

The police procedural is run by executive producer John Eisendrath. Also taking on EP duties are Jamie Foxx and Datari Turner, with Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment co-producing the project. Here’s everything we know about the next chapter of the story ahead of its release!

Alert season 2 release date set for March 2024

A season 2 of the series is officially happening! The show was renewed on March 23, 2023, which was almost a month after the season 1 finale debuted. That’s really great as sometimes networks take longer to decide whether they’re renewing a project. While the show airs on Fox, episodes from the first season are currently streaming on Hulu.

Now we finally have a release date! Even though it’s a little later than we were hoping, at least the show has a day where it’s going to debut. Alert season 2 premieres Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox. New episodes will be available to stream on Hulu the next day. The new season will hold the Tuesday night time slots.

Initially, the series should have been back in fall 2023, which would have given us a September, October, or November release date. However, the second season premiere has now been pushed to the 2024 midseason schedule, so we won’t be seeing it this year. We predicted a January-March 2024 release date, and it turns out we were right.

We’re not sure how many episodes are in the second season just yet. The first season had a total of 10 episodes. But this is typical for inaugural seasons, which are usually shorter. Since work on season 2 has been delayed by the strikes (more on that below), studios in general are looking at 10-13 episode orders for their new seasons. Especially when it comes to dramas since they take longer to film and complete post-production compared to half-hour comedies. So we’re predicting to see perhaps another set of 10 episodes for Alert season 2. We’ll see what Fox decides!

How the writers and actors strikes have affected production

The reason the release of season 2 has been delayed is because of the strikes in Hollywood. The writers strike began on May 2, 2023 and the actors strike followed on July 14. Since the police procedural was renewed in March, that wasn’t enough time for the writers to finish penning all the scripts.

After months of negotiations, the good news is that The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) who represents the big studios were able to come to an official agreement! This means the writers strike has come to an end. A new three-year contract was ratified by the guild, and is effective from September 25, 2023 through May 1, 2026. According to Deadline, writers rooms for many shows, including Alert season 2, opened back up the week of Oct. 2. That means work on scripts has resumed!

And we have even more good news on the actors front! The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and AMPTP have come to a tentative agreement as of Nov. 9, 2023, meaning the actors strike is over as well! The proposed three-year contract needs to be voted on and approved by members of SAG-AFTRA. But actors can return to work. Yay!

When does season 2 start filming?

According to Deadline, Alert season 2 is looking to start filming back up in early December 2023. Some shows have already gotten back to filming, right after the actors strike was announced to be over. Though with networks having to schedule out and begin filming basically all of their scripted series at the same time, some take priority over others. They’ll also want to spread their projects out to have enough content on television. So honestly a December production start date and March 2024 release for Alert isn’t all that surprising.

Cast: Who will appear in the second season?

An official cast. list has not been shared by the network yet. However we do expect the main players to return and reprise their roles. We shared who we think is coming back below:

  • Dania Ramirez as Nikki Batista
  • Scott Caan as Jason Grant
  • Adeola Role as Kemi Adebayo
  • Ryan Broussard as Mike Sherman
  • Fivel Stewart as Sidney Grant
  • Petey Gibson as C Hemingway

Was Keith really Keith?

I think any of us who were invested in the story could guess that Keith wasn’t really Keith, aka Nikki and Jason’s missing son. And we were right. He was actually an imposter named Lucas, sent to Nikki and Jason by his biological mother Beth Colt. She comes to take him back and during the standoff with police when they find the duo, the young man, played by actor Graham Verchere, is shot by his own mom. It’s also revealed that the real Keith slipped through ice and into a frozen lake, which his adoptive sister Sidney saw but never said anything. So now it’s presumed that Keith is dead.

What to expect next in the story

A synopsis and description for the upcoming season has not been shared. After the season 1 finale, showrunner John Eisendarth spoke with Deadline, and said the following in terms of some ideas he has for a second season:

"There’s definitely going to be a serialized component, a story for their family and their relationship that I have in mind for next year. It will be different, but I’m hopeful that every season could have a contained, mysterious, serialized story. That goes alongside the endless numbers of missing persons cases. There’s all kinds of personal stories that I am looking forward to, like exploring the love triangle between Jason and Nikki and Mike. I love Kemi and exploring more of who she is. We just touched on how she became the person she is and her relationship with her dad. I’m confident we have a lot of incredibly interesting ground to cover."
