Exploding Kittens: From card game to Netflix animated series starring Tom Ellis

Usually when you hear a movie or show is being adapted, that means it comes from a book most of the time. There’s been a new trend where video games like The Last of Us, One Piece, and more are brought to life from game to television series. Well, Netflix is taking it one step further by adapting a card game! And that’s Exploding Kittens starring Tom Ellis, coming in 2024.

The Lucifer actor played the devil in the Netflix hit. But this time, he’s trading in the devil for playing God instead. In well, cat form. Aka God Cat. Also voicing characters in the animated series alongside Ellis are Abraham Lim, Lucy Liu, Ally Maki, Mark Proksch, and Sasheer Zamata. Shane Kosakowski and founder of the Exploding Kittens card game Matthew Inman serve as showrunners. How purr-fect is that!?

Exploding Kittens: Card game and animation series

Let’s start off with the card game, as that’s where the story of animated series comes from. With a total of 56 cards, including the four “exploding kitten” ones, players draw cards until someone comes across the Exploding Kitten. When that happens, they lose the game unless they have a “defuse” card that would keep them in the game and prevent that player from “exploding.” That’s the basics of it, but for an in-depth explanation of how to play, check out the video below:

Now, on to the upcoming show we’re all excited about! Exploding Kittens follows the story of God (Tom Ellis) and the Devil as the “eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell reaches epic proportions.” Where does that lead them? Right down to Earth in the bodies of house cats. Talk about the hilarious antics that are going to happen! Being sent to Earth in feline bodies, will the two be able to work out their problems?

The game is a very popular on now, and it’s pretty simple. So I think it’s a great idea to create an adult comedy animation series revolved around this story. It’s one series I’m definitely going to be adding to my watch-list. 2024 can’t come fast enough! It’s also pretty exciting to have Tom Ellis back in a new role after Lucifer, even if it is just voicing God Cat. This is going to be so fun!
