Mark your calendars! The Conners season 6 release date set for Feb. 2024: Everything we know
Updated Nov. 17, 2023 – The Conners is ABC’s top-rated scripted series, and really this doesn’t come as a shock to us! Sometimes spin-offs don’t work, but I think this Roseanne spin-off definitely does. And I can’t wait to see more of the show in The Conners season 6!
Though, we’ll have to wait a while before we see the sixth season on our screens as the installment isn’t coming this year. Why is that the case and what is confirmed for the new season of the series? Here’s everything we know ahead of its release!
The Conners season 6 release date: February 2024
Good news! We finally have the release date for the comedy’s sixth season. The Conners season 6 premieres Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. New episodes will stream on Hulu the next day.
Initially, the sixth season was supposed to be a part of ABC’s fall 2023 television schedule. That means we would have seen the show back on our screens in September or October 2023. However, it was announced the series would not be coming back in 2023 at all, and the midseason schedule is what networks had been eyeing. This is because of the strike delays, which we go into detail below.
The sitcom usually gets around 20-22 episodes per season, but don’t expect the same episode count this time around. Due to the Hollywood strikes, productions have been delayed significantly. And so most shows are looking at doing shorter seasons for their new installments, around the 10-13 episodes range. With the sitcom being a half-hour comedy, hopefully that means 13 episodes is possible. Compared to dramas, filming and post-production don’t take as long to finish.
Has The Conners season 6 been affected by the strikes?
The Conners season 6 has been affected by the writers strike and the actors strike. This is why the release date has been delayed. With the show being renewed on May 3, 2023, just over 10 days after the season 5 finale aired, this was only a day after the writers guild went on strike. That means no scripts had been written before the writers went on strike.
Things have turned around though! The writers strike has officially come to an end after The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), who represents the major studios came to an agreement. Members of the guild voted and ratified the new three-year contract, and were able to get back to work starting on Sept. 25, 2023. The new agreement is in effect through May 1, 2026. While studios have to prioritize certain productions over others since everything is coming back at once, hopefully The Conners is one of those first ones to start up again. It’s not clear whether the writers room for the show has reopened yet. But it should have given that a release date has been set.
The actors strike is now over as well! The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the AMPTP came to a tentative agreement on Nov. 9, 2023 after months of negotiations. Members of the guild still need to vote on the proposed three-year contract. However, while that’s happening, actors can get back to work and productions can begin filming once again. It’s not clear when production will start back up for the series. But it should be soon!
Could season 6 be the last season?
No official word has come from ABC on whether season 6 is the last for the Roseanne spin-off. However in June 2023 (before the actors strike), John Goodman told France 24 in an interview that he thinks they “may be coming to an end on it.” Though with the series being a big success and drawing many viewers in for ABC, we’ll have to see if this will actually be the case. Though there had been hints that CBS’ Young Sheldon could be coming to an end, it was still pretty surprising when the network announced the seventh season would be the last as the sitcom is CBS’ No. 1 comedy. But still, all things must come to an end eventually. We’ll have to see what happens with The Conners.
Cast: Who could be returning in the new season?
A cast list hasn’t been announced, but we expect the main cast members to return. We shared them below:
- John Goodman as Dan
- Laurie Metcalf as Jackie
- Sara Gilbert as Darlene
- Lecy Goranson as Becky
- Emma Kenney as Harris
- Ames McNamara as Mark
- Jayden Rey as Mary
- Jay R. Ferguson as Ben Olinsky
Goodman’s roles on television early on in his career helped him become a popular film actor. He’s known for movies like Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, The Flintstones, Atomic Blonde, and more. When it comes to Metcalf, I know her from playing Sheldon’s mom, Mary, on The Big Bang Theory! Fun fact! Her real-life daughter, Zoe Perry, plays a younger version of her mother’s character Mary on Young Sheldon. But many of you probably know her before that from her role on Roseanne, which helped bring her recognition. The actress’ other projects include 3rd Rock from the Sun, Desperate Housewives, and Frasier.
Where to watch Roseanne and its spin-off
At the moment, only the last four episodes of The Conners season 5 of the series are streaming on Hulu. The other four seasons are not available on the streamer or any other platform. When season 6 premieres, you can watch it on ABC with new episodes streaming on Hulu the next day. Though it seems like the company doesn’t keep installments available to watch online indefinitely.
But, that will change soon. Werner Entertainment, the production company who handles The Conners, signed a deal with Lionsgate’s Worldwide Television Distribution Group and Debmar-Mercury, Deadline reports. This will bring all the past seasons of the sitcom to streaming, as well as any possible future seasons. It’s not clear which streamer the series will be available on just yet.
If you’re a fan of The Conners, then you more than likely know that the comedy is a spin-off of Roseanne. All 10 seasons of the ’80s and ’90s series are currently streaming on Peacock.
