Yes, the Home Alone movies are streaming, here’s where

HOME ALONE - Eight year old Kevin MacAllister (Macaulay Culkin) gets lost in the shuffle as his large, upper-middle class suburban family rushes to make a plane that will ferry them off to their Christmas vacation in France; Kevin, having been banished to an attic room as punishment, is subsequently forgotten. At first this is a dream come true, as for the first time in his young life he has no one to answer to but himself, and he takes full advantage of his newfound freedom, eating junk food and watching late-night horror flicks. But when the bumbling Wet Bandits Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) target his house for a robbery, Kevin must step up to defend his home; he sets a maze of booby traps so elaborate that only an eight year old imagination could concoct them. It’s Thanksgiving, meaning it’s time to watch some holiday movie favorites. And few are as loved as the Home Alone movies. But where can you find them streaming in 2023?

The films have bounced around the streamers for a bit from Netflix to Max. Right now, the home for them is Disney+. This makes sense as Disney acquired Fox a few years back and the last film was a Disney+ exclusive.

Home Alone remains one of the most astounding success stories in Hollywood history. Premiering Nov. 16, 1990, this film made for just $18 million, had low-key promotion and was expected lucky to break even. Instead, it spent a stunning 12 weeks as the number-one-grossing movie with an eventual box office take of $476 million (which would be over a billion dollars today).

By now, the plot is well known: Racing to make it to the airport for a Christmas trip to Paris, the McAllister family accidentally leaves young son Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) behind. At first relishing having the house to himself, Kevin has to defend it against a pair of dim-witted burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) with some quirky traps.

The movie’s slapstick comedy and story made it one of the highest-grossing comedies of all time. A 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, followed with Kevin and the Wet Bandits clashing in New York. While not as huge a hit as the first film, it still grossed $360 million.

A Culkin-less 1997 sequel featured new characters with the same nutty traps of a kid defending his home from some thieves. However, its $79 million gross pales next to its predecessors.

After that came the 2002 Home Alone 4 and 2012 Home Alone: The Holiday Heist films, both made for TV, the first for ABC and the second for ABC Family. Disney+ released Home Sweet Home Alone in 2021 and that was the last of those.

Thus, for either fans who make a viewing of it an annual tradition or newbies wanting to see what the fuss is about, Disney+ is the place to watch this surprisingly successful movie series.

Next. Wish won't stream on Disney+ for holidays. dark
