American Rust jumps from Showtime to Freevee (season 2 updates and more)

American Rust is making a rare jump from Showtime to Freevee on Prime Video! Here’s what we know about Season 2 of this unique crime drama!

Shows jumping from one network to another is nothing new, but it’s still rare to see a show canceled by a major cable network and then revived on a different streamer. American Rust premiered on Showtime in September of 2021 for a nine-episode season, only to be canceled in January of 2022.

That looked to be the end of it, but in June of 2022, Amazon stepped in to revive the show for their ad-supported Freevee branch. Production looks to be completed and Season 2 adding to the thrills of this underrated series.

What is American Rust about?

Based on the novel by Phillip Meyer, American Rust follows Del Harris, a police chief in Buell, a small Rust Belt town just outside of Pittsburgh. Already a morally compromised man, Meyer is put on the spot when the son of the woman he loves, Grace Poe, is accused of murder.

As he delves into the investigation, Harris starts peeling back the layers of the town and its many secrets and getting in even deeper into things. Season 1 ended with him covering up a murder and Season 2 is likely to examine the fallout. That includes Grace’s attempts to unionize and her own twisted moves to get closer to Del as well as Lee English taking on a high-profile legal job in Pittsburgh. Also, having been beaten into a coma while wrongfully imprisoned, Billy Poe will try to rebuild his life.

Who stars in American Rust?

While no details have been released yet, it does appear the main cast is intact. That includes Jeff Daniels as Del, Maura Tierney as Grace Poe, and Rob Yang as Deputy Steve Park. There are likely to be some new faces coming in, but so far, not much has been confirmed.

When will Season 2 of American Rust premiere?

Filming for the new season appeared to wrap up in the spring of 2023 as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette did a story on the cast filming on location. That indicates production was completed before the SAG strikes.

This makes it likely the show will premiere on Freevee in early 2024. There are yet to be any announced dates or the release schedule as Freevee was likely delayed a bit due to the SAG strikes.

At least those who enjoyed Season 1 of American Rust are happy the series is getting an unexpected return and continuing its unique drama.
