It’s time to dance… Dance the night away! Nominations for the first major awards show in 2024 are in, and it’s the 2024 Golden Globes kicking things off for us in the new year. The three-hour ceremony airs live on both CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024 starting at 8 p.m. ET. Of course once the list came out, all eyes turned towards the Barbie movie!

The great news is that the Margot Robbie-led hit has snagged the most 2024 Golden Globes nominations out of any other movie or series, except Succession. Both projects are tied at a total of nine nominations. And we’re definitely not surprised! This is what I was expecting, and honestly the fantasy comedy definitely deserves all the recognition.

The nominations we’re excited about include Best Movie, Robbie for Best Actress, and Greta Gerwig for Best Director. Here are all the 2024 Golden Globes categories Barbie is nominated for:

  • Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
  • Cinematic and Box Office Achievement
  • Best Screenplay
  • Margot Robbie: Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
  • Ryan Gosling: Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture
  • Greta Gerwig: Best Director – Motion Picture
  • Best Original Song – Motion Picture:
    • “Dance the Night”
    • “I’m Just Ken”
    • “What was I Made for?”

Following Barbie close behind with eight nominations is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. This also definitely doesn’t come as a shock with the cultural phenomenon, “Barbenheimer!” I’m sure the Golden Globe recognition is just the beginning for the popular Barbie movie! After all, we still have the Emmys and Oscars to look forward to later in the year. So why does the film deserve to win? Read on below for our thoughts!

Why Barbie deserves to win at the 2024 Golden Globes

In all of the categories the film has been nominated in, they all just make sense. We still bop to “Dance the Night” and “I’m Just Ken,” Robbie brought a surprising depth to her Barbie character, Gosling just made us laugh out loud so many times, and more.

A true box office hit

Of course a movie’s success and recognition isn’t just about the numbers. There’s been many projects over the years that get snubbed at the awards shows, and even don’t do well at the box office. But sometimes they’re really good, or get a following after their run in theaters. But we truly can’t talk about Barbie‘s success without mentioning the crazy numbers it broke in the box office! And with the film coming to streaming on Dec. 15, 2023, I’m sure Max is going to blow up.

Barbie has brought in $636 million domestically, and garnered $1.4 billion worldwide! It is now Warner Bros. highest-grossing film ever. This is definitely no easy feat. It seemed like everyone and their mother dressed up in pink and headed tot heir local theater to watch the movie. I certainly did that with my mom and sisters! Overall, it’s a feel-good production with a strong message. I think that plays into the film’s success.

Off the charts story and acting

As mentioned above, Barbie really portrayed a story that’s like no other. Especially during these times. It’s been hard to find a film or series that’s unique and stands out. And promotion wise, Warner Bros. did an excellent job at piquing people’s interests, while being vague on what the actual story is about. Especially with the messages the movie is conveying – inclusion, highlighting sexism, and so many other aspects of our society that we need to improve upon. Barbie does it in a smart way that’s light-hearted and understandable, but really makes you think about the actions we need to take to be better.

The acting was also on point! I’m going to be honest. At first during promotions I didn’t know how to feel about Robbie playing Barbie. I didn’t quite see it. But the talented actress’ performance of the character completely exceeded my expectations! She is Barbie. No one else could have played the doll come to life so well. And Gosling as Ken! I feel bad that I didn’t know the actor could be so funny.

This is Greta Gerwig’s first Best Director Golden Globe nomination (and she needs to win!)

While all the categories the Barbie movie is nominated for need to win, I think the one most of all that should take home the Golden Globe accolade is director Greta Gerwig. This is her very first nomination in the category at the Golden Globes, and she really does deserve to win it. The film wouldn’t be what it is without Gerwig, who also co-wrote the script.

The director’s keen eye and sense of direction helped bring Barbie all the way! And that’s simply why we can’t get Kenough of the movie. In August 2023 when the film surpassed $1 billion at the box office, it became the first production by a solo female director to achieve this. I’m already applauding her wonderful abilities!
