We were excited to see Fire Country return for season 4 following season 3's massive cliffhanger. The popular firefighter drama left us on the edge of our seats, wondering who made it out alive from the Zabel Ridge fire and who succumbed to the flames.
Ultimately, we got more than we bargained for due to some major cast changes, and season 4 ended up delivering some of the most emotional moments of the series. From Vince's memorial to Jake's wedding to Violet, season 4 of Fire Country took us on a rollercoaster of emotions.
3. "Goodbye for Now" (season 4, episode 1)
In the show's season 4 premiere, we finally got an answer to the burning question (no pun intended) that we had at the end of season 3: who made it out of the Zabel Ridge Fire?
As the episode progressed, it quickly became clear that the patriarch of Fire Country, Vince (Billy Burke), had died while serving his community. This didn't come as a surprise, since the announcement of Burke's exit came shortly after season 3 ended; however, the episode was still quite emotional for those of us who have followed the show since the beginning.
In one of the premiere's most touching moments, members of Edgewater's community came together to honor Vince's life and legacy at his funeral. While giving his eulogy, Bode (Max Thieriot) vowed to spend the rest of his life dedicated to his father's mission of protecting the community and Station 42.
From a viewer's perspective, the moment served as a fitting ending to the journey Vince and Bode took as father and son throughout the first three seasons.
2. "On the Carpet" (season 4, episode 10)
In "On the Carpet," a massive wildfire stretched Edgewater's firefighters thin, and the aftermath left some having to answer for their actions.
From season one, Fire Country planted the seeds that Jake (Jordan Calloway) would have to contend with his past. This included the possibility of the character meeting his estranged half-brother, Malcolm, a firefighter in Edgewater's sister community, Drake County.
The moment finally came when the two neighboring counties came together to put out a massive wildfire that threatened to destroy Drake County. However, the reunion between the two brothers turned dangerous when Malcolm took a nasty fall while trying to rescue Jake. The accident left the young firefighter in a coma and created tension between Jake and Manny, who made the call to send Bode and Malcolm in for a rescue.
Despite the unfortunate ending, "On the Carpet" gave viewers the chance to see a new side of Jake. When Malcolm got hurt, the character went from a competent, meticulous captain to a scared older brother. As viewers, we saw him wrestle with the thought of losing his brother before they could even develop a relationship. It was both sweet and sad.
1. "Try Not to Drown" (season 4, episode 20)
In the season four finale, Station 42 and Three Rock came together to handle a catastrophic dam failure that sent dangerous floodwaters through Edgewater.
"Try Not to Drown" was one of the best episodes of season 4. It featured a disaster unlike anything Station 42 had ever seen before, with flood scenes that felt more like a disaster movie than a broadcast television episode.
But what made it emotional was the beautiful moment at the end of the episode that brought the Edgewater community together: Jake and Violet's wedding. As the couple exchanged vows, Jake realized he'd lost his and Violet's rings in the flood; they had been in a car swept away by the fierce waters.
In a touching full-circle moment, Bode and Sharon decided to gift the couple Sharon and Vince's old rings. It not only served as a nice nod to Vince's memory but also acknowledged the sweet father-son dynamic between Jake and Vince. There is no question the fallen firefighter would have wanted his protege to have the rings on his special day.
