Not everyone was on board when CBS announced a Blue Bloods spinoff. Fans didn't exactly know what to expect, and many were still grieving the loss of a show they'd followed for years. However, Boston Blue eventually cut through the doubt and carved out its own lane on CBS. Its first season gave audiences what they loved about Blue Bloods while offering a fresh take on modern-day policing.
Another big reason Boston Blue connected with audiences was its portrayal of complex family dynamics in season 1. From Danny moving to Boston to be near Sean to Lena pursuing a relationship with her father, the first season of Boston Blue hit us hard with its emotional moments.
Here are three episodes from season 1 that stood out the most.
3. "Faith and Family" (season 1, episode 1)
In Boston Blue's pilot, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) traveled to Boston following the news that his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), had been injured in a terrible fire. While waiting for his son to wake up, Danny partnered with BPD detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) to investigate the fire's origins and capture whoever was responsible.
"Faith and Family" set the tone for the first season of Boston Blue. Its main focus is the endearing but oftentimes complex relationship between a father and son. After Sean's accident, Danny had to take the time to really reckon with his past and the type of father he had been to his sons. This required him not only to reexamine his priorities but also to make big changes in his life.
Ultimately, the Boston Blue pilot is about growth and the lengths we will go to protect our loved ones.
2. "Hard Truths" (season 1, episode 10)
In "Hard Truths," Jonah (Marcus Scribner) struggled to come to terms with his father's killer being released from prison. As Mae and Sarah searched for answers, they uncovered painful truths.
Grief is complicated because you never know when it will rear its ugly head. For instance, the Silvers were able to move on with their lives following the murder of their father, but they never stopped grieving him. In this way, "Hard Truths" is about how traumatic unresolved grief can be and the impact it has on those around you.
Even more than that, the episode is about family and how navigating life becomes easier when you have a support system.
1. "Patrol" (season 1, episode 20)
In "Patrol," an investigation pushed both the Silvers and the Reagans to their limits, as one of their own fought for their life.
The season 1 finale of Boston Blue is a wonderful culmination of the journey the show's characters took over 20 episodes. The episode showed how close Lena and Danny had become as both friends and partners since Danny first joined the BPD. It also solidified the deep bond the Silvers and Reagans had created, as they resembled more of a family unit in the finale than before.
Most importantly, "Patrol" gives Boston Blue the emotional core and hopeful narrative it needs to succeed in season 2.
