Season 9 of 911 has been on the books for months now, but we are still looking back at the episodes that led to so many changes for the members of the 118. Being the first season without Peter Krause’s Captain Robert “Bobby” Nash, it took a lot of getting used to for fans and the characters to move forward. There were plenty of emotional beats during the season, especially with so much change in the air. What were some of the most emotional episodes of season 9?

While season 9 gave us so many feelings, whether the storylines didn’t make sense or we had our hearts in our throats the entire time, there was a lot to focus on for many of the characters. One of the main themes of the most emotional episodes of the season involved the team working together toward a common goal.

ANA MERCEDES, TERRI HOYOS, RYAN GUZMAN
9-1-1 - “Día de los Muertos” - The 118’s beliefs are put to the test as they respond to emergency calls involving a Jack-o’-lantern and a few more jump scares than they were expecting on Halloween. THURSDAY, NOV. 6 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EST) on ABC. (Disney/Christopher Willard) ANA MERCEDES, TERRI HOYOS, RYAN GUZMAN

4. Eddie’s abuela passes away in season 9 episode 5

For nine seasons, we have loved watching Eddie Diaz’s relationship with his Abuela, Isabel Diaz. This episode focused on their relationship before she passed and showed how close they were as always. Sadly, she passed away in her sleep, and it was a stunning blow for Eddie and his family. In fact, his son Christopher said he saw her right before Eddie found out the news from his Tia Pepa.

The episode ended with a beautiful celebration of Día de los Muertos, in which Eddie watched the procession with Pepa as they remembered the matriarch of their family. Eddie also took part in setting up an Ofrenda with Christopher, in which they also included Bobby and Christopher’s mother, Shannon, to remember those who they had also lost.

AISHA HINDS, CORINNE MASSIAH, ANGELA BASSETT
9-1-1: “Handle with Care” - Harry’s first day as a probie proves to be more challenging than Chimney expects. Meanwhile, Eddie and Hen are called into court over a former patient that brings back some old demons. THURSDAY, JAN. 29 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EST) on ABC. (Disney/Christopher Willard) AISHA HINDS, CORINNE MASSIAH, ANGELA BASSETT

3. Hen’s illness brings the team together in season 9 episode 9

Due to radiation exposure after her trip into space during the four-episode season premiere arc, Hen began experiencing debilitating medical symptoms that impeded her ability to work. Because Hen kept her symptoms from Chimney Han, her captain and best friend, it led to tension between the two. Eventually, the team came together to help Hen work through treatment of her disease and to overcome what happened to her in episode 9.

This was one of the first major tests for the 118 as they dealt with seeing another person they cared about in danger since losing Bobby. Between Hen being fired and eventually learning to become stronger both mentally and physically, the team was there for her even when things seemed bleak.

OLIVER STARK
9-1-1 - “Pick Your Poison” - ABC. (Disney/Christopher Willard) OLIVER STARK

2. Buck’s difficult road to recovery in season 9 episode 15

In Episode 13 of the season, Buck became the victim of an abduction after traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, for a firefighter competition with co-worker and best friend Eddie Diaz. After being prescribed opioids for pain, Buck grew addicted and had a difficult time overcoming his dependency on the pills.

It wasn’t until Buck almost stole fentanyl from the ambulance at work that he admitted what was happening to Chimney. Not only was this a painful admission for him to make, but it also occurred around the anniversary of Bobby’s death. In order to help Buck through it, the team stayed with him at his house during the worst of his withdrawal from the medication.

This was such a powerful episode showing how addiction could crop up and how overcoming it impacted Buck and his relationships with his loved ones. The team was there for him when he needed them, and he got the support and help he needed before it could get worse.

CORINNE MASSIAH, ELIJAH M. COOPER
9-1-1 - “Hearts and Flowers” (Disney/Christopher Willard) CORINNE MASSIAH, ELIJAH M. COOPER

1. The season finale separates everyone as Athena’s life is in danger

In the season 9 finale, the team discovered Athena had been shot during a call. While waiting on word of her condition, they all became separated for various reasons. In the meantime, the son of the man she was serving a warrant to was after her in revenge after a detective claimed Athena pulled the trigger to kill his father.

While Buck went with Athena’s son, Harry, to get some air, Eddie went to the hospital chapel to pray while Ravi Panikkar went with May Grant to go check on her mom. This left Chimney and Hen alone in the waiting room as things became murky due to the would-be killer trying to shoot his way into the ICU.

Despite the separation, the team was able to communicate with each other in different ways to figure out how to fix their situation and save Athena. Chimney made sure Ravi knew what was happening as Buck got a call from his sister Maddie at dispatch, who helped him understand the situation.

Even though the team couldn’t be all together to save the day, they managed to work in conjunction with one another to make sure Athena was kept safe. It showed just how important the team was to one another and how they all had the ability to work together to overcome any situation they were in.

As season 9 played out, there were storylines that may have given us pause, but then episodes like these reminded us of what 911 is truly about. It showed how the personal relationships between the characters are the heart of the show and that when they came together in crisis, it showed the resiliency of the 118. We’re excited to see what season 10 has to offer for the characters as a whole.
