Blue Bloods fans weren't quite sure what to expect when CBS announced a spinoff. All audiences knew was that the new show would focus on Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan, a consistent face on Blue Bloods throughout its run. However, as Boston Blue aired its first season, it found an audience with both fans and non-fans of its parent show. Furthermore, now that the show has been renewed for season 2, the door is open for more of our favorite Blue Bloods characters to return.
Several prominent Blue Bloods characters made special cameos in season 1 of Boston Blue. For example, Bridget Moynahan made two onscreen appearances as Erin Reagan and even directed season 1, episode 8, titled "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son." Further, Marisa Ramirez's Maria Baez had a heavily recurring role on the show due to her character's ongoing romantic relationship with Danny. And Will Hochman and Len Cariou made appearances as Joe Hill and Henry Regan, respectively.
However, Boston Blue still has an abundance of characters at their disposal to bring back for season 2 with these five particular characters at the top of our list!
5. Nicky Reagan-Boyle
Nicky Regan-Boyle, portrayed by actress Sami Gayle, was a staple of Blue Bloods for ten years before leaving for college in the show's tenth season. The last we heard of the character, she had successfully graduated from Columbia University and moved to San Francisco for work. Now, while that might make it tricky for the character to return, it's definitely not an impossibility. There is always a chance we could see more of Erin Reagan in season 2 of Boston Blue, so what better time to reunite mother and daughter?
In season 2, Nicky could come to visit her uncle Danny and cousin Sean for the holidays. Family events have always been a big deal for the Reagans, so it would make sense. A holiday-centric storyline would also free Nicky up from her work responsibilities. She could join the Reagans and Silver's for family dinner and catch everyone up on her life in San Francisco.
4. Joe Hill
Blue Bloods fans were no doubt pleasantly surprised to see Will Hochman return as Joe Hill in Boston Blue's season 1 finale, titled "Patrol." The character joined the Silver/Reagan clan's weekly Friday night Shabbat dinner and gave Lena Silver some friendly advice following her reunion with her biological father. Obviously, Joe never got to meet his father due to his untimely death, but he carries firsthand knowledge of what it is like to navigate new familial dynamics. A perspective Lena can most definitely appreciate.
Season 2 could explore Joe and Lena's non-romantic relationship even further. Joe has a lot of wisdom to offer Lena on her situation, and audiences could benefit from seeing the two exchange stories. It would also be nice to see Joe work a case with his uncle. The two have experience putting the bad guys away together on Blue Bloods. It would be nice to see them pair up again.
3. Jack Reagan
A significant part of Danny Reagan's life outside of policing is fatherhood. It is an integral part of the character's physiology and has been central to his character development over the years. However, Boston Blue primarily focuses on Danny's relationship with Sean and their shared bond over being police officers. While this is a crucial element of the show, it is also important that audiences see the changes in Danny's relationship with Jack in this next chapter of his life.
In the midseason finale, viewers learned that Jack is currently overseas working with Doctors Without Borders. As a result, Jack's absence does make sense. He's doing important work in a field that he loves. However, in an interview with TVLine, co-showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis said they "never want to lose sight of the fact that Danny has two sons."
In this way, season 2 would be a great time for Jack to at least make a small cameo. Given the character's lack of proximity to Boston, he could even appear over Zoom. It's just important that audiences see Danny be an active, present father to both of his sons.
2. Jamie Reagan
One of the most dynamic relationships on Blue Bloods was the brotherhood between Danny and Jamie. The two were forced to reevaluate their relationship following the murder of their brother Joe, which, in turn, led to some old wounds being reopened. However, Danny and Jamie ultimately learned how to communicate with each other and were stronger for it.
In season 1, episode 12, titled "St. Patrick's Day," viewers got a glimpse of how life is going for Jamie and his wife, Eddie, in New York. In the episode, Danny received a photo of Jamie and Eddie's baby son, whom they named Joe Francis Reagan, in honor of Joe and Frank. The moment in the episode was brief but meaningful for Blue Bloods fans. It served as a culmination of the journey Jamie and Danny took in the show and set the stage for an impactful cameo in season 2 of Boston Blue.
1. Frank Reagan
Arguably, the most important Blue Bloods character we want to see make an appearance in season 2 is Frank Reagan. The Blue Bloods universe might not exist if not for Tom Selleck's consistent efforts to keep the show's legacy going. It is a big reason the show lasted for as long as it did, in addition to its solid viewership.
Whether in Boston or New York, Boston Blue has the world at their fingertips when it comes to a Frank Reagan cameo. The character could come to Boston in a professional capacity to spearhead a collaborative case between the NYPD and BPD. Or the writers could take a more personal approach by having something significant happen in Danny's life that would warrant his return to New York for some much-needed fatherly advice. Regardless of the circumstances that would bring Frank to Boston Blue, season 2 would benefit greatly from his presence.
