Ever since Bobby died, people have wondered whether Athena would ever date again.

But, according to 911 showrunner Tim Minear, that won't be happening any time soon.

On Sep. 9, TVLine released its fall TV preview for 2026. In it, Minear revealed that love isn't in the cards for Athena right now. He explained that while he "would certainly consider it," it's not a priority. However, we'll still see a lot of Athena in season 9, as Minear teased her new role as a detective for the LAPD.

Athena Grant has finally been promoted

For Athena, the road to Detective has been a long one.

In season 9, Hen and Eddie rescued a group of undocumented migrants from a building fire. The two then worked to find visas and housing for the families, who were at risk of deportation by ICE. Athena, being a member of law enforcement herself, got involved and eventually discovered more than a simple immigration case.

It was discovered that one of the people involved in the case, Detective Ben Hooks (Josh Stamberg), was a dirty cop working for human trafficker Nikolay Caster (Piotr Adamczyk). Caster was responsible for the migrants being in the burning building and had tasked Hooks with covering it up. However, Athena, being the upstanding cop that she is, didn't stop pursuing the truth behind how the migrants ended up in a random apartment building in LA.

To keep Athena quiet, Hooks staged a shooting at Caster's mansion that ended with the mob boss being murdered and Athena on a ventilator. When Caster's son found out what happened, he went to the hospital to finish what Hooks started. However, he underestimated the power of the 118, who banded together to protect Athena. With a new lease on life, Athena hung up her dress blues and took on a new role as a detective.

Suffice it to say, in season 10, we can expect Athena to keep kicking butts and taking names like she's always done. But this time around, she has more control. As a detective, she gets to lead cases and delegate tasks. Her cases will also have higher stakes. Detectives investigate everything from homicides to terrorism. This will not only give Athena the chance to be involved in thrilling storylines but also allow her to continue to interact with the 118.

After Bobby died, it was important that the 911 crew rally around each other. They all loved Bobby, and they all lost him. And when things get rough, families shouldn't tear apart; they should hold each other a little tighter. That's what makes Athena's scenes with the 118 so special. They demonstrate the lasting bond between Bobby's loved ones, even after his death.

911 season 10 premieres Oct. 15, at 8pm on ABC.
