The race was on to save Chimney in 911 season 8, episode 15. However, the episode ended with a major loss that we didn’t want to happen, and it’s going to have a huge effect on the future of the series.
Caution: This post contains MAJOR SPOILERS for 911 season 8, episode 15.
When we learned there would be a two-part contagion storyline, we assumed that the 118 would find a way to make it out alive. Even with Chimney facing death from this accelerated virus, there have been so many near-death experiences that we just didn’t expect 911 to kill off a main character. Look, this is the series where Chimney survived a metal bar to the head, and Maddie survived her throat being slashed.
However, that didn’t stop us fearing the worse. After all, there had been that leak with the funeral scene, but many believed that it would be a dream or a fear. Did we really think that the show would kill off Bobby Nash after all the near-death experiences he’d faced?
What I will say is that this was not the night for ABC Boston to put on a special instead!
Athena and Buck raced to get to Moira in 911 season 8, episode 15
The episode started with the need to find Moira. She was in the wind, and it meant a helicopter chase, the Army, and much more to take her down. Athena and Buck were not going to give up, though, and they exhausted all their options, including turning to Karen for help, to get the only antiviral available.
As Athena and Buck manage to get the antiviral back, Athena is the one to go inside with it. She was fully suited up to prevent infection, but of course, there were issues with getting in. After all, the building was still on lockdown.
This is the 118, though — and this entire family comes through. They will break down every barrier they can to get in.
Chimney was able to get the antiviral and he was saved. It was excellent news, but then we learned the heartbreaking truth.

Bobby’s suit had a leak in 911 season 8
Bobby got his team out and then he stayed behind. Through the glass, he shared that his suit had a leak, and that the virus in the air had been slowly leaking into his system. He knew about it, but he also knew that Chimney needed that antiviral. Chimney would never have accepted the antiviral if he knew Bobby was now sick.
I’ve got to admit that Bobby made the right choice. Chimney would be leaving a lot more behind if he didn’t get that antiviral. Plus, as the captain, he had to make the heartbreaking decision. That didn’t stop it from being absolutely heartbreaking, though.
We got the initial bittersweet speech to Buck. Remember that Buck looked up to Bobby as a father, especially in the earlier days of the series. Buck even helped Bobby get the help he needed when he started drinking again and was the one Bobby opened up to about the apartment fire and the lives lost.
Bobby was far too calm as he said, “You’re going to be OK, Buck. Remember that. They’re going to need you. I love you, kid.”
Then came the speech to Athena, as he apologize to her for putting Chimney first. He never wanted to die, but he couldn’t take the antiviral when Chimney also needed it. For Bobby, it was about being a captain and putting the team first.
“This isn’t how I wanted to leave you. I’m not choosing to leave you. I chose to save my team because it was the right thing to do. It was never because I wanted to go. I don’t want to go. If I could choose, I would stay with you. Always.”
This is going to have a huge knock-on effect for the series. TVLine reports that we’ll get three episodes of the characters grieving, and we already know that there’s a huge funeral moment happening. Honestly, I didn’t see this coming, but these types of deaths do need to happen. With all the crazy saves, sometimes, we need to see that the 118 can’t escape death.
However, it’s going to mean there’s a new captain coming into the 118. Maybe it’s time for Hen to get that position permanently.
911 airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC, although there’s a break until May 1!
