It seems a new doctor is about to check into ABC’s long-running medical drama this fall. Deadline reports that James Wolk has been cast in a recurring role on Grey’s Anatomy season 23, with Wolk joining the show in a guest stint that is expected to include at least four appearances early in the season.
Wolk will be playing Seth Norton, a handsome and arrogant surgeon turned businessman who seems to care more about the bottom line than anything else. Seth is the owner of Olympic Regent Health, a luxury medical care center where patients must pay out of pocket for what is described as “elevated care.” Given his status as the owner of the medical care center, it’s going to be interesting to see what brings him to Grey Sloan Memorial and how he’ll become intertwined with the season’s storylines.
I’m thrilled to see Wolk joining the Grey’s Anatomy family, but I’m not going to lie, I think ABC missed the mark by casting Wolk on the flagship series in a recurring arc rather than casting him in a lead role on the planned Texas spinoff.
Despite being announced months ago, we’ve yet to get any casting announcements for the Grey’s Anatomy Texas spinoff, which is slated to premiere early in 2027, and there is no denying that Wolk would have been a perfect lead for the show. He’s no stranger to broadcast, having starred in a handful of series over the years, and he’s also got the looks and charisma we’ve come to expect from our Grey’s leading men.
Wolk would have been absolutely perfect to lead the cast of the Grey’s Anatomy Texas spinoff. There is no denying that he’s got the looks to rival McDreamy and McSteamy—I mean, his character’s description literally makes sure to sneak in “handsome” as if we don’t already know Wolk is easy on the eyes. Wolk absolutely possesses the hotness levels MDs at Grey Sloan are required to bring, but it’s his charisma and leading man energy that is what really makes him perfect to lead the new spinoff.
They say everything is bigger in Texas, and we definitely imagine that would also apply to a talented surgeon’s ego. There is something about Wolk that even when he’s playing a character who is flawed, you can’t help but root for him. That’s a quality that is definitely needed when you tap someone to play a cocky surgeon in a medical drama.
We’ve been dying to see Wolk back on our screens leading a new series, and Grey’s Anatomy’s Texas spinoff would have been the perfect vehicle for his return to broadcast. Thankfully, there is technically a route for Wolk to detour to Texas, as it would be feasible for him to be brought in to oversee a department of the Texas hospital, and perhaps Seattle isn’t the only city that is home to one of his medical centers!
It would be fun to see Wolk debut on Grey’s Anatomy and then make the jump to the spinoff, which could give us more time with his character and make better full-time use of Wolk’s talents. We're definitely excited to see Wolk make his debut as Dr. Seth Norton this fall on Greys Anatomy; we just would rather see him lead the Texas spinoff.
