Heading into the first season of Boston Blue, every fan had a wish list of the characters from Blue Bloods that they hoped might pop up for a cameo in the spinoff series.
At the top of most lists were appearances from the various members of the Reagan family who had been a central part of the show’s 14-season run. Much to the pleasure of the fans, season 1 pulled off a series of cameos, including several core members of the Reagan family with appearances from Bridget Moynahan’s Erin Reagan-Boyle, Len Cariou’s Henry Reagan, and Will Hochman’s Joe Hill. These cameos were in addition to multiple appearances from Marisa Ramirez’s Detective Maria Baez over the course of the season.
Of course, there was one major name likely at the top of many fans’ wish list that failed to make an appearance in the first season of Boston Blue: Tom Selleck.
For 14 seasons, Selleck was the heart of the show as New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan and was a key ingredient in the recipe to the show’s success. While we knew that he was not going to be a core part of Boston Blue, the hope was that we’d get at least an appearance or two from Selleck in the first season. After all, Danny often went to his father for advice, especially when making a major decision and moving to Boston certainly qualified as such.
Sadly, the creative team was unable to pull off an appearance from Selleck in Boston Blue season 1; however, it seems that there are ongoing conversations with the Blue Bloods star about a potential appearance in the show’s second season!
“We’ve been talking about Mr. Selleck for a long time. He is always getting asked and as Donnie always says, the door’s open. We would love to have him and we will make sure the story is just right because Tom is so adamant about the story, as he should be and as we all should be. I think it would be great if we can have him and I’m excited for whatever story it ends up being if he does come,” Sonequa Martin-Green told Women’s World.
It’s certainly exciting to know that there are ongoing conversations being had with Selleck and that the Boston Blue team is doing all they can to make a guest appearance happen. And it’s not just the fans who are hoping to see it happen.
“I think I love when anybody from Blue Bloods comes over because I really believe that it legitimizes us. It’s almost like they give us their blessing when they come on and we make sure they know that. We applaud them, we give them standing ovations,” Green added, “We’re, like, ‘Thank you for coming,’ because we know we’re standing on their shoulders. But I want everybody from Blue Bloods on this show, but it’d be nice to see Tom [Selleck].”
Hopefully, Boston Blue will be able to craft a storyline that allows for Selleck to return as Frank in season 2, and he’s not the only Reagan we’d love to see next season. While Boston Blue did give us an update on Jamie and Eddie, we’d love to see the pair make a proper appearance in season 2 via guest spots from Will Estes and Vanessa Ray!
Boston Blue will return for season 2 this fall on CBS.
