On Tuesday, CBS released official photos and synopses for their fall TV shows, including teasers for the season 2 premiere of Boston Blue. The episode, titled "The Crash," premieres Friday, Oct. 9, at 10/9c on CBS.
According to the episode description, Henry Reagan (Len Cariou) will aid the BPD's investigation into a terrifying serial killer causing panic across the city.
The official synopsis for the episode is as follows:
"When a series of murders begins mirroring the infamous Boston Strangler killings, Danny and Lena race to stop a copycat killer before he strikes again. As panic grips the city, Jonah and Sean, fresh off their rookie year, as well as Henry Reagan ("Blue Bloods" vet Len Cariou), jump in to help Danny and Lena track down and arrest the killer. Also, Danny faces a career-defining promotion while Lena uncovers a lead that could link the attack on Detective Rodgers to a powerful figure."
We're guessing Henry volunteers to help with the copycat killer investigation after he travels to Boston to see his grandson, rather than the other way around. This makes sense given Henry's storied career in law enforcement and his experience leading investigations of this caliber. He'll most likely be an invaluable asset in capturing whoever is committing these murders.
This is not the first time Henry has visited Boston to help his grandson. The character made an appearance in season 1, episode 13, titled "Beautiful Broken Things." In the episode, Henry arranged for Danny to use his old New York badge number (51466) on his new Boston Police Department badge.
The moment was particularly meaningful because of what Henry represents in the Blue Bloods universe. As the family patriarch, he has been a consistent, strong voice for his family and community in New York. Whenever the Reagans needed sound advice on Blue Bloods, they turned to him, and he always offered sage advice. Now, with Boston Blue, the character has taken on a similar role in supporting his grandson and great-grandson in a new chapter of their lives.
Henry has a strong presence but still brings a homeliness to Boston Blue. From what we saw in his first cameo, he meshes well with the rest of the cast and doesn't take up too much space. This lets Boston Blue's main cast shine while showcasing everything audiences love about Henry Reagan.
It'll be exciting to have him return at the top of the new season, but more importantly, it seems to suggest that Boston Blue will continue to find ways to bring Blue Bloods alums in for guest spots when it can. Hopefully, Henry will be the first of many cameos we'll see in the second season.
