There’s some mixed news when it comes to Brilliant Minds tonight, Monday, Jan. 6. NBC will bring the show back, but it’s for one-week only.

After taking a short winter break, the medical drama with heart and empathy is back. This has been a great series for those who needed something different when it came to medical dramas. We got some unique diagnoses, characters that weren’t stereotypes, and intriguing personal storylines for each character.

The previous episode ended with a major cliffhanger. Ericka’s building has collapsed, and she is trapped inside. The team will need to deal with the influx of patients coming into the hospital while also worrying about one of their own.

Brilliant Minds will air its season 1 finale tonight

Let’s start with the mixed news. In some good news, it’s a night all about Brilliant Minds. After bringing us a rerun to kick off the night, a new episode of the series will air at a slightly earlier time. Tune in at 9 p.m. ET/PT tonight for the first of two new episodes.

Yes, it’s a double-bill of new episodes tonight. This is where there’s some bad news. It’s the Brilliant Minds season 1 finale tonight. The second hour will bring us the aftermath of that building collapse, while also wrapping up a few shocking reveals from the season.

Is Brilliant Minds renewed for season 2?

Knowing that the season is coming to an end means we start looking out at the chances of a renewal. NBC hasn’t made a decision about Brilliant Minds just yet. In some disappointing news, the series didn’t get an extended season order, either. This used to be a clear sign that the networks weren’t going to renew a show, but that’s not necessarily the case anymore. More and more shows are reducing their episode counts, and that could be the case here.

The linear ratings haven’t been spectacular for the series, which is something we’re concerned about. It is one of the lowest-performing shows on the network, but it’s not the worst. This could allow it to just scrape through for a second season.

Quite honestly, we need more shows like this. It’s got heart and a diverse cast. It also has some excellent storylines. The problem was that the pilot was clunky—it is why I always give a new show two episodes at least to get past the pilot episodes.

Brilliant Minds season 1 finale will air tonight starting at 9/8c on NBC.
