It looks like BuckTommy has come to an end again in 911 season 8, but this time it’s on Buck’s terms. In fact, the reasoning behind it is one of the most mature things that Buck could have done, even if it does mean hurt and pain for Tommy.
This has nothing do with Eddie, and I’m really happy about that. While Tommy did bring up Eddie and Buck’s feelings for the man, I’m really glad to see Buck just point out that they are just friends. Buck can love a friend — we are all able to do that — without wanting to actually be with the man, especially when he knows Eddie is straight. I will always say that not every character has to be gay, and no, there doesn’t need to be a gay awakening for all straight men. We are allowed straight men in the world and in TV!
Back to Buck, though. He made a mature decision, and one that will serve him well in the future if he sticks with it.
Buck needs to learn how to be alone in 911
I think anyone who goes through a breakup should spend some time being alone. This doesn’t mean lonely. Alone and lonely are two very different things.
We all need to be comfortable with our own thoughts and our own company. It’s important to find ways to enjoy life without someone else constantly being there, and Buck has the chance to do that. The first time, he didn’t exactly do it in a healthy way. His consistent baking led to him actually replacing the loneliness with one single action. It’s a distraction, rather than something fun to do.
Buck needs to find a way to be happier with himself. It’s important for him to be able to sit and appreciate everything that he has around him, and it’s important for him to be able to sit and just do nothing. There’s an art to that, and I say that from experience.
It takes time to learn how to be alone, and the 911 writers need to avoid rushing that. Once Buck knows how to be alone, he can then make friends with the right people for the right reason, and he can start relationships for the right reason.
By the way, Buddie fans, even if they did get together, it wouldn’t work out with Buck’s current personality flaws. He needs to learn how to be happy alone first.
