The Rookie season 8 ended on a wild note. After a journey that went from training officer and probie to partners to lovers, Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) finally proposed to Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) on a beach, and she accepted.

But the happy moment was ruined by the pair being knocked out and abducted by people working for crime lord Heath Everett. That means season 9 will open with the pair held captive before any wedding plans take place.

At the Disney Upfront on May 12, O’Neil and Winter discussed with TV Insider the plans for season 9 and what the wedding might be. It opened with Winter suggesting the season could begin with the pair in separate cells, trying to reach each other before they are rescued.

Mekia Cox threw in how, like fans, the characters would obviously turn out in droves for a Chenford wedding. “We’ve got to celebrate the two of you. It’s kind of a big deal. I think the entire crew would want to celebrate Chenford.”

That may sound good, as The Rookie has had some fun wedding episodes before. That includes Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Bailey (Jenna Dewan) tying the knot amid antics that included hunting a missing ring and a crazy bachelor party. Yet if the actors have their way, the Chenford wedding may not be so grand!

As it happens, both O’Neil and Winter agree that rather than a huge, fancy wedding, Tim and Lucy may decide to get married on the down low.

O’Neil told TV Insider that her wedding hopes are that their wedding is “peaceful and uneventful," admitting that "I have this theory that if we were true to what’s going on with them, that they might like to keep it very, very private in order to ensure that nobody else gets stabbed or kidnapped."

Winter agreed, pointing out, “I think Tim is the type of guy that would probably elope, to be honest. I think he would do something small and sneak out and not do a big production, but I don’t know.”

It would be fitting that after they’re finally rescued, Tim and Lucy decide not to waste any more time. They’d also want to avoid the chaos of wedding planning, interference from their friends and family, and how the odds are pretty good that some sort of mini-disaster would affect the ceremony.

It’d be perfect for both characters for the two to just stroll into the precinct and announce they got hitched in a private ceremony or even in Las Vegas. Naturally, the rest of the squad would be ticked off that they weren’t invited, which may push the two to have a bigger public ceremony later.

We still have to see if Lucy and Tim survive their captivity, but the actors hint that circumstances may prevent us from getting another epic wedding.

The Rookie season 8 is streaming on Hulu.
